The City of Washougal was incorporated in 1908 and is known as the Gateway to the Gorge for its easy access to hiking trails, scenic drives, and Columbia River recreation. Washougal’s downtown Reflection Plaza plays host to unique community events all year around. A pedestrian tunnel connects the downtown to the Columbia River area for fishing at Steamboat Landing, or a leisurely stroll on the levee trail to Captain William Clark Park. You can even walk or drive to the stunning Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge which features 1,049 acres of former Columbia River floodplain and boasts more than 200 species of birds! Our own Washougal River provides year-around recreation including kayaking, fishing and swimming. Washougal is a short 20 minute drive to Portland International Airport, which serves major airlines for domestic and international travel, and only a 30 minute drive to downtown Vancouver for more restaurants and nightlife. Department Information

The Washougal Police Department is a full service agency made up of 20 commissioned officers. The department structure includes a Chief, Commander, (4) Patrol Sergeants (2) Detectives, and (10) patrol officers, (1) K9 officer and (1) SRO. Patrol is divided into 2 squads working four 11 hour shifts. The department is dedicated to a community orientated policing style.

Salary Information

2026 Lateral:

Min: $7730.29 to $8963.06 Max.

Rates for 2027 and 2028 will receive 2026 wages plus 3% each year.

Vacation - 96 hours a year to start

Uniforms - The City provides all uniforms and equipment for officers, including body armor, boots, and weapons

Longevity Incentive - 1% at 5 years, 1.5% at 7 years, 2.5% at 10 years, 3.5% at 15 years and 4.5% at 20+ years

Education Incentive - 2% of base pay for AA/AS Degree, 4.25% added to base pay for BA/BS Degree and 4.5% pay for Masters Degree

Retirement - LEOFF 2 benefits

FTO, firearms, defensive tactics, and TASER instructors - 5.0% Wage increase during training

3% incentive for detectives and school resource officer
