Entry level openings are announced on the City of Washougal website.  Interested entry level applicants must complete the written exam and physical agility test through Public Safety Testing prior to our testing deadline. The City of Washougal employment application is required after successfully passing the PST exams.

The City of Washougal is a classified Civil Service System using ranked eligibility lists developed from test scores to select final candidates for hire.  The top scoring candidates will be referred to the Department for final assessment.

The City of Washougal was incorporated in 1908 and is known as the "Gateway to the Gorge" for its easy access to hiking trails, scenic drives, and Columbia River recreation. Washougal is a short 20-minute drive to Portland International Airport, which serves major airlines for domestic and international travel, and only a 30-minute drive to downtown Vancouver for more restaurants and nightlife. Department Information

The Washougal Police Department is a full-service agency of 21 commissioned officers. The department structure includes a Chief, Captain, (4) Patrol Sergeants, (1) Detective Sergeant, (2) Detectives, (10) patrol officers, (1) K9 officer, and (1) SRO. Patrol is divided into two squads working four 11-hour shifts and four days of work with four days off. The department is dedicated to a community-orientated policing style.

Salary Information

Effective November 6, 2022

Entry Level:

Pre-academy monthly wage for entry-level officer at hire date: $6028.01

Monthly salary increases to $6362.91 once you enter the academy

Monthly salary increase to $6697.80 once you complete the academy and enter into the FTO program

One year from hire, your salary will move to $6899.93 

2022 Lateral:

Min:  6,899.93 to $7765.91 Max.

Rates for 2023 and 2024 will receive 2022 wages pluc 100% of CPI (June to June West B/C all Urban Consumers - with a minimum of 2% and a maximum of 4%)

Education Incentive - 2% of base pay for AA/AS Degree, 4% added to base pay for BA/BS Degree

FTO, firearms, defensive tactics, and TASER instructors - 3.0% Wage increase during training
