Accessibility Statement

Last updated:

Our Commitment to Accessibility

Public Safety Testing (PST) works to make its website usable by candidates, agency representatives, and all visitors. Our goal is to help people find information, explore public safety careers, and access testing services independently.

Our accessibility goal is Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. We use these guidelines to guide improvements. A comprehensive evaluation has not yet been fully completed, but we have tested a majority of the site.

Measures to Support Accessibility

Our work includes improving page structure, keyboard controls, accessible names, and readability. Recent changes address the shared navigation, homepage, and test calendar. We check changes in development previews and use findings from our public-page review to identify further work.

Screen-reader testing and a broader review of complete user journeys remain priorities. The review summary below describes what we checked and the limits of those checks.

Known Limitations

  • Career Opportunities search: some search and filter controls still need clearer, consistently associated labels for people using assistive technology.
  • Tabbed candidate information: the selected tab and its relationship to the displayed content need clearer information for screen-reader users.

If these features prevent you from finding information, please contact us for help.

Ongoing Accessibility Efforts

Our priorities are to address the known barriers above, test common tasks more thoroughly, and update this statement as the website changes. Further work includes testing with screen readers, higher zoom levels, and mobile devices, as well as reviewing downloadable documents, multimedia, and services supplied by other organizations.

Feedback & Assistance

If you have difficulty using the website or need information in another format, please use our Contact Us page or call 1 (866) HIRE 911. If the online form is difficult to use, please contact us by phone.

To help us understand the problem, include the page address, what you were trying to do, and what happened. If you can, tell us which browser, device, or assistive technology you used and how you would prefer us to contact you. Please do not include passwords or sensitive personal documents in a website accessibility report.

Testing accommodations

For accommodations for a written or physical test, please follow our testing accommodation request process. That page explains the requirements and how to submit a request.

Public Safety Testing Accessibility Review

This summary records the evidence currently available for PST. It is a limited review, not a completed Accessibility Conformance Report or VPAT. The observations below do not assign sitewide conformance ratings to individual WCAG criteria.

Pages and tasks covered

The initial review covered the homepage, For Candidates, For Agencies, Calendar, Information Center, Career Opportunities, and Contact Us. Follow-up checks focused on the changes to shared navigation, homepage controls, and calendar controls, plus this statement page.

Account features, registration, payment, and complete form workflows have not been fully evaluated. Downloadable documents, videos, embedded forms, chat, and other third-party services also need further review. An untested feature is not necessarily inaccessible; its accessibility has not yet been confirmed.

Evaluation Methods Used

Checks included manual keyboard operation, inspection of page structure and information exposed to assistive technology, selected color-contrast measurements, and development previews at desktop and mobile widths. Inspecting accessible names and roles is not equivalent to testing with a screen reader. Mobile-width previews do not establish accessibility on actual mobile devices.

These checks do not establish compatibility with every browser, device, or assistive technology. Screen-reader use, higher zoom levels, text spacing, touch interaction, and complete processes need further testing.

WCAG review findings

The references below connect our observations to selected WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA requirements. They are not a complete checklist. Level AAA has not been assessed.

Selected requirements and PST findings
WCAG requirementObserved results and remaining work
1.1.1 Non-text Content (A) Decorative homepage photos no longer use placeholder descriptions. Other images, documents, and non-text content still need a broader review.
1.3.1 Info and Relationships (A) Homepage tables use column headers, and selected forms expose field labels. Career Opportunities filters and the relationships between candidate tabs and their content need improvement.
1.4.1 Use of Color (A); 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) (AA) Selected calendar filters are underlined as well as styled with color. The homepage candidate and agency buttons have improved text contrast. Other color combinations have not been comprehensively measured.
1.4.4 Resize Text; 1.4.10 Reflow (AA) Browser zoom is allowed, and selected changes were checked at desktop and mobile widths. Higher zoom levels and reflow across full pages and processes still need testing.
2.1.1 Keyboard (A) Shared navigation menus, calendar month controls, and test-type filters support keyboard operation. Escape closes open navigation submenus. Full keyboard testing of all workflows remains outstanding.
2.4.1 Bypass Blocks (A) The shared page layout includes a keyboard-accessible skip link to the main content.
3.1.1 Language of Page (A) The shared page layout identifies English as the page language. A full review of other layouts and language changes within content remains outstanding.
3.3.2 Labels or Instructions; 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (A) Calendar fields have labels, menu controls expose expanded state, filters expose selected state, and key icon links have descriptive names. Career search labels and candidate tab semantics still need improvement. Validation messages and complete forms need further testing.

How to interpret this review

This statement describes selected pages and features at the time of review. It is not a certification of full accessibility compliance. Improvements to individual controls do not establish conformance for an entire page or process. We will revise the findings as additional testing and improvements are completed.
