The Port Townsend Police Department places a high emphasis on community policing. Department staff includes the Police Chief, three sergeants, eleven officers and four civilian support staff. Port Townsend maintains a Civil Service employment list.   Candidates who pass Public Safety Testing's initial testing process will be invited to complete an employment application and participate in oral board interviews.   Vacancies are filled by Civil Service “rule of five” with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation and selection as vacancies occur.



Salary Information

2021: Entry Level Police Officer starts at $33.02/hour

5 step annual pay system, plus education incentive pay and longevity pay.

The City of Port Townsend provides a comprehensive benefits package, including:

Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance

The City pays 90% of the premium for employee, spouse and dependents up to age 26. This plan is administered by WA Teamsters Welfare Trust Fund.

Life & AD&D Insurance

  • Plan A which provides $30,000 for each Officer and Life of $3,000 for each dependent.

  • Short Term Disability (Time Loss) Plan C which provides benefits of $200 per week for each Officer.

  • Disability Waivers which provide for an additional 9 mos. of contribution waivers under the medical plan.

Deferred Compensation Match Program

A 457(b) program match is offered in which employees may set aside a portion of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis for retirement purposes.

The City provides a 50% match of up to the total of 4% of the officer’s base earnings.

State Pension Plan

Officers are enrolled in the Washington Department of Retirement Systems, Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters (LEOFF) Pension Plan.

Vacation Leave

  • The City uses a graduated vacation accrual schedule based on completed years of service. Eighty hours of vacation leave is earned after the first full year of service.

Sick Leave

  • Officers accrue 4 hours of sick leave per pay period, beginning the first day of employment.

Holidays

  • The City recognizes ten holidays and one “floating” holiday each calendar year.
