Important Information

Lateral candidates are not required to take a written exam. Lateral candidates are not required to take a PST CPAT. Qualified candidates will be invited to attend an Oral Board Interview and Practical Skills Assessment. The Oral Board score, and Practical Skills Assessment score will be weighted equally to calculate the candidate’s final score.

After successful completion of the initial testing process, eligible candidates will be invited to a Chief’s interview. A background investigation, psychological testing, and medical exam will take place after conditional offer of employment.

Veteran’s Credit may be available. If requesting Veteran’s Credit, please submit a DD214 Form prior to confirmation of attending an Oral Board/Practical Assessment.

The City of Ocean Shores, Washington is 1 ½ hours west of Olympia, Washington and is located right on the ocean. Ocean Shores is nationally known for having an excellent atmosphere for relaxation, maintaining an exceptional quality of life, a low crime rate, and a fantastic area for fishing and hunting. The City is approximately 12 square miles and has 6 miles of beachfront and 26 miles of interconnected freshwater lakes and canals. Ocean Shores has approximately 7200 full time residents and experiences nearly 5 million visitors annually.

Department Information

Ocean Shores has approximately 7,200 full-time residents and is heavily populated by tourists year round. The spring and summer months are the peak season with 15,000 to 30,000 visitors per day. The average age of residents is 65 years old.

Ocean Shores is a peninsula that is 6.6 miles long and 3 miles wide. The west part of the peninsula borders the Pacific Ocean and the east “bay side” borders Grays Harbor. Ocean Shores has 23 miles of fresh waterways, lakes and canals.

The Ocean Shores Fire Department is a combination fire department with 28 career personnel including a Chief Officer, Assistant Chief officer, an Administrative Assistant, a Fire Inspector and 24 Firefighters with either paramedic or EMT certifications. Additional personnel consist of volunteer members. The department is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The career staff works a 48/96 schedule as per their IAFF local 2109 union contract. The department has three shifts, each with a captain and lieutenant.

As with most fire departments, 85% of the 911 responses are for emergency medicine (EMS). The nearest ER is at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, located 25 miles away in Aberdeen. Per state law, our department also often transports stroke or heart attack patients to a hospital with a higher level of care in Olympia.

Salary Information

Starting salary: Will be based on the current bargaining agreement between the City of Ocean Shores and IAFF 2109. The current salary range is $7,374-$8,927 per month (depending on qualifications).

• Longevity pay: 1.5% per 5 years continuous employment

$15.00/mo contribution to LEOFF II disability insurance plan.

• Uniforms/Equipment: initial uniforms/safety equipment provided; clothing allowance of$500/year with

rollover.
