The department is a nationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency providing police services for the citizens, business owners and visitors of the City of Federal Way. Our agency is divided into four primary divisions: administration, patrol, investigations and civilian operations. The Federal Way Police Department was established in 1996.

Hiring Status

Once an applicant's score is received from PST it will be placed on an eligibility list upon approval by the Civil Service Secretary/Chief Examiner and valid for one (1) year.  The eligibility list is a continuous listing that is maintained as scores are approved.  No one may be re-examined for the same class within 6 months of the effective date of successful examination.  After that time the Civil Service Secretary will consider the higher score from the applicant. 

Oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis.   Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "Rule of Seven" with the top seven candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

Effective January 1, 2024, $6,915 - $8,832/Month + up to 10.25% additional Career Development pay (see website).  Signing Bonus of $5,000.00 paid in two equal installments of $2,500.00.  First installment after successfully passing the first written exam at the Basic Law Enforcement Academy.  Second Installment after completing 12 month probation which begins at graduation from BLEA.
