Our agency is divided into four primary divisions: administration, patrol, investigations and civilian operations. The Federal Way Police Department was established in 1996.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing that is maintained as oral board interview passing scores are approved by the Civil Service Secretary/Chief Examiner and valid for one (1) year. No one may be re-interviewed for the same class within 6 months of the effective date of the original interview. 

Oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Zoom interviews available upon request from out of state applicants only. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "Rule of Seven" with the top seven candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

Effective January 1, 2024,  $6,915 - $8,832/Month based on Experience level, + up to 10.25% additional Career Development pay (see website).

Incentives for Lateral Officers:

Hiring bonus of $30,000 for experienced police officers will paid in three installments. The following installments: first upon meeting requirements for the Equivalency Academy (firearms qualification) of $5,000; second successful completion of the six month probationary period of $10,000; and third at one year anniversary date of hire of $15,000.

Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification Must have successfully completed a State Basic Police academy. Out of state applicants will be required to succesfully complete a WSCJTC Lateral academy upon employment.
Prior Experience Requirement Minimum of one year of continuous law enforcement employment at a municipal, county or state law enforcement agency as a police officer performing the essential duties on patrol, and no more than 18 months break in service.
Other Lateral applicants are not required to take the physical ability test.
