The Morton Grove Fire Department is a full-service, career fire and emergency medical services agency serving the Village of Morton Grove, Illinois 60053. Established in 1904, the department operates from two strategically located fire stations staffed 24 hours a day by a professional team of 45 members, including 40 sworn firefighter/paramedics. The department's frontline apparatus includes two Advanced Life Support (ALS) engines, one squad, two ALS ambulances, and an incident command vehicle. In addition to fire suppression and emergency medical services, the department provides technical rescue, fire prevention, public education, and community risk reduction programs. Firefighter/Paramedic

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of a Company Officer, the Firefighter/Paramedic performs responsible work in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, and public education activities. Personnel are responsible for protecting life, property, and the environment through effective emergency response and by promoting community safety. Employees must be able to perform strenuous physical work under hazardous and stressful conditions while exercising sound judgment and teamwork.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Respond to fires, medical emergencies, rescue incidents, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
• Provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) patient assessment, treatment, and transportation in accordance with Illinois EMS protocols and department policies.
• Perform fire suppression activities, including operating handlines, ladders, ventilation equipment, water supply systems, and other firefighting tools.
• Participate in technical rescue operations, including vehicle extrication, confined space, trench, and other specialized rescue incidents as trained.
• Conduct fire inspections, public education programs, pre-incident planning, and community risk reduction activities.
• Operate and maintain fire apparatus, ambulances, and department equipment.
• Perform daily inspections, testing, cleaning, and maintenance of apparatus, equipment, and fire stations.
• Complete incident reports, patient care reports, and other required documentation accurately and promptly.
• Participate in department training programs and maintain all required state and departmental certifications.
• Work cooperatively with other public safety agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations.
• Perform station duties, including housekeeping, equipment inventories, and other assignments as directed.
• Maintain physical fitness and professional appearance standards established by the department.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Illinois driver's license with the ability to obtain any required endorsements.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation, medical examination, psychological evaluation, and physical ability assessment.

• Knowledge of modern firefighting, rescue, and emergency medical practices.
• Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergency situations.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Working Conditions

Work involves exposure to extreme temperatures, smoke, hazardous materials, infectious diseases, loud noises, and physically demanding activities. Firefighter/Paramedics work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and must be available for emergency recall as required.
