Once you have downloaded/completed the application, you may forward it to the Civil Service Secretary at micki.sterbick@ci.steilacoom.wa.us.  Applications are scored based on education, prior work experience, and training.

Community Information

Steilacoom became the first incorporated town in Washington Territory in 1854. Located between the city of Tacoma, on the North, and the State Capital in Olympia, approximately twenty miles to the South, the Town stretches 2.1 square miles atop a bluff overlooking the Puget Sound and the Olympic mountain range. The southern boundary of Steilacoom is Fort Lewis, an active U.S. Army base. The town, with a population of 6,200, is primarily residential development with many attractive homes, beaches and parks. Most residents are employed in the surrounding metropolitan area or by the many government facilities located nearby. Steilacoom is the terminus of the County operated ferry system serving Ketron Island, Anderson Island, and the State operated ferry system serving McNeil Island State Corrections Center. Pierce Transit provides regular bus service.

Department Information

A combined Public Safety Department was created by ordinance in 1987. In prior years, the Department operated as a traditional Police Department. Both full-time and volunteer personnel comprise the Public Safety Department. Full time personnel are cross-trained in police and emergency medical services. The present Department is budgeted for nine (9) commissioned staff, one (1) noncommissioned staff.

Prior to application, applicants must be drug free pursuant to the timelines below for all controlled substances and all derivatives of controlled substances and all derivatives of controlled substances listed with exception of CBD products. With the exception of marijuana, more than three total uses of any individual/combination of these drugs is an automatic disqualifier.  Applicants shall not be subject to automatic disqualification for more than three total uses if 15 years have elapsed since the most recent use.
