Spokane County Fire District 8 serves the citizens of Spokane County south of the City of Spokane and the City of Spokane Valley.

The District provides services to the unincorporated areas of Latah Valley, Moran Prairie, Valleyford, Ponderosa, Morningside and Saltese. Each of these neighborhoods make up a diverse land use of residential, light commercial, agricultural and multi-unit dwellings.

The area offers a scenic and family­ friendly community with numerous recreational opportunities, including parks, community pools and open hiking spaces. The centennial trail is near the district and offers walking and biking opportunities. We are also within forty-five (45) minutes of several ski areas, lakes and rivers. The area boasts a great mix of urban and rural living for year-round enjoyment.

Department Information

Spokane County Fire District 8 provides a full range of services that include fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, education and investigation, and associated support and maintenance services to our 23,917 citizens in a 110 square mile area in south Spokane County. SCFD8 members responded to 4,209 incidents in 2024 from the District's four fire stations located in the Moran, Valleyford, Ponderosa, and Saltese areas. Each station is staffed twenty-four hours a day with a combination of career, and volunteer personnel.

We are comprised of approximately fifty (50) Full-time employees and fifteen (15) volunteer members who are governed by a three (3) member elected board of Fire Commissioners. The administrative staff is comprised of dedicated and collaborative members of the organization to include the Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Finance Manager, Human Resources Manager and Office Specialist.

Salary Information

All wages and benefits are negotiated by Spokane County Fire District 8 Firefighters IAFF Local 3711. The current contract expires December 31, 2027.

Starting January 1, 2026 Step A Firefighter/Paramedic salary:

  • Starting wage: $78,603.28
  • After 16 weeks: $88,428.69
  • After 6 months:$98,254.11 -90% salary of top step Firefighter/Paramedic

Benefit Information

Paid Time Off:

  • Vacation:120 hours annually/10 hours monthly (based on shift work accruals)
  • Sick Leave:240 hours annually/20 hours month accrual. 1st year pre-loaded (based on shift work accruals)
