Important Information

The dispatch center is located in the Sheriff's Office in Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island.  Shifts are by bid, with frequent overtime.  San Juan County offers dispatchers a competitive compensation package.  Dispatchers are represented by the Sheriff's Guild. 

Dispatchers also answer the business phone lines coming into the Sheriff’s Office, perform reception duties at the lobby window, maintain warrant and protection order files, copy and file police reports, and enter uniform crime reporting data.  Excellent keyboarding skills are required, with the ability to learn a variety of software platforms.  Multitasking ability is absolutely required.

 

Community Information

San Juan County is a beautiful island community located the in the extreme northwest portion of Puget Sound on the Canadian border. It is a popular destination area for boaters from all over the world, and more importantly, is a perfect place to raise a family. The San Juan Islands consist of 174 islands. Most are uninhabited or privately owned. There are four main islands, San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw Islands, all linked to the mainland by the Washington State Ferries out of Anacortes. The majority of San Juan County citizens live on these four islands. The county seat is located in the only incorporated town in the islands, Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island. San Juan Island has the largest population concentration with over 7,000 islanders.

Department Information

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office provides the 9-1-1 center for San Juan County. All emergency calls for service for law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services are received and dispatched through this center, 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The 9-1-1 center also provides after hours dispatch services to the local electrical utility, and public works. Dispatch has E-911 technology, with Spillman CAD and Records Management software.  There are 8 dispatchers, typically working in pairs and a dispatch supervisor.

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation and selection as vacancies occur.

The typing test is a critical component of your written test score and you are required to complete the online typing test within 90 days (before or after) your written exam.
