The Mercer Island Police Department employs 31 commissioned officers, who serve in a variety of capacities to include Administration, Criminal Investigations, Street Patrol, and Marine Patrol. The department offers opportunities for career development in a variety of areas. Specialty assignment opportunities are available to all qualified officers. Specialty assignments include but are not limited to: Emergency Management, Crime Prevention Officer, School Resource Officer, Bicycle Patrol, Marine Patrol, Dive Team, Detectives, Tactical Response Unit, Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Accident Investigation, Field Training Officer and Media Relations Officer. Officers receive a high level of continuous training and may choose specific areas of focus.

Prior Experience Requirement Experienced Applicants: To qualify for this category the applicant must have been a full-time, fully commissioned and certified law enforcement officer with less than twenty-four (24) months of the last thirty-six (36) months in that position.

Lateral Applicants: To qualify for this category, the applicant will need to have been a full-time, fully commissioned and certified law enforcement officer with at least twenty-four (24) months of the last thirty-six (36) months in that position.
