Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT

The City of Langley will begin accepting applications for the position of an Entry Level Police Officer starting November 25th, 2025. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. A police officer for the City of Langley performs a full scope of law enforcement duties in protecting life and property, conducting investigations, working in partnership with neighboring law enforcement agencies, local school district, fire, and medical as well as the enforcement of laws and ordinances. If you undertake this job, you will join a highly valued and strongly supported Police Department. Unlike positions in larger police departments, a police officer for the City of Langley will have the opportunity to perform the full scope of law enforcement duties in protecting life and property, conducting investigations, working in partnership with neighboring jurisdiction law enforcement, fire, and medical as well as local businesses and organizations.

Pay and Benefits

The City of Langley offers competitive pay and benefits using Regence Blue Shield medical coverage offering Medical and Dental plans for employees and family members. Entry Level pay from $31.73 ($65,998.75 annual) to $41.28 ($85,858.10 annual). Pay will be determined by experience level approved by the Mayor, Chief of Police, or their designee. Additional specialty and educational pay are available depending on qualifications. Excellent vacation, holiday, and sick leave accrual.

Collective Bargaining Unit

Each police officer has the opportunity to become a member of the Langley Police Guild bargaining unit.

Qualifications Required

Entry level applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age 21 at the time of examination
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Read and speak the English language
  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Washington State driver’s license or ability to obtain one, free of suspensions or revocations
  • No felony convictions
  • Ability to pass a series of qualifying pre-employment general testing
  • Must live within 45 minutes *drive time* from Langley Police station 112 2nd ST. Langley, WA 98260 (Excludes Ferry travel. Ferry is unreliable and does not operate during night hours or severe weather)

Illustrative Examples of Work

Uses a patrol vehicle or foot patrol to patrol city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace, control vehicular traffic, prevent unlawful conduct, detect and investigate violations of law. Is alert for violations of traffic laws, abnormal situations such as broken windows, open doors, and suspicious activity. Arrests and investigates persons involved in criminal activity. Issues traffic infraction for violations of traffic laws. Enforces all laws fairly and impartially as determined by responsible judgment.

Responds to requests for service by citizens involving all types of police activity such as, traffic complaints, animal control complaints, civil or domestic disputes, crime investigations of theft or burglary, crimes in progress, and crimes against children. Situations encountered can also range from very minor situations not involving any crime assisting the public to felony crimes involving stress, violence, and immediate danger to others or to the officer. Interviews victims, witnesses and suspects. Investigates crime scenes.

Prepares a variety of reports and records including investigative reports, warnings and correction notices, issues citations, evidence tags, digital documents, criminal history forms, impoundment forms and various others. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings. Performs miscellaneous other duties as assigned including care and maintenance of department equipment, records, supplies and facilities.

Must be able to deal with extremely stressful events in a professional manner.Must be in excellent physical condition without defects that would prohibit participating in all aspects of police work. No felony convictions or domestic violence related misdemeanors. All misdemeanor convictions will be closely scrutinized. Must meet all current requirements of the Langley Civil Service Commission. Any information intentionally left off of background investigation will result in automatic disqualification. Applicants must have proof of high school graduation.

Must have the ability to communicate well, speak clearly, to insure proper communication in handling the public in both normal and emergency situations. Must have an attitude of concern to preserve the peace and serve the public. Must have the ability to employ good common sense and use sound judgment in dealing with the public in normal and stressful emergency situations. Must be concerned with Police/Community relations. Must have good working knowledge using law enforcement related computer programs and radar equipment. Will be responsible for a take-home patrol vehicle including care, upkeep and scheduling of maintenance.
