Step 1: Take an Initial Written Exam

Visit Public Safety Testing to schedule an initial exam.

On the website, choose a testing date, time, and location that is most convenient for you. Tests are offered regularly at various locations across the country or can be taken at home.

Step 2: Online Application

Upon passing the Public Safety Testing written exam you must complete the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Detention Deputy Application. Your PST score must be less than six (6) months old.

Step 3: Physical Agility Test

After passing the oral board interview, will need to pass the Idaho Physical Agility Test before the department begins your background investigation. This will be conducted by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office or at an Anytime Fitness for out of state applicants (see PST website for further details).

Step 4: Oral Board Interview

Your application will be reviewed and once it has been verified that all requirements have been met you will be invited for an interview. Candidates located out of the local region will be offered a zoom interview.

Step 5: Background Investigation

Upon successfully passing the physical agility test you then undergo an extensive background investigation. Passing the background investigation requires an extraordinary level of integrity and honesty.

Step 6: Final Requirements (Conditional Offer)

With an offer of employment, you will be hired upon passing the following:

  • Psychological Evaluation
  • Polygraph Examination
  • Medical Examination
  • Pre-employment Drug Test

Hiring Status

Kootenai County Sheriff's Office - Detention Deputy has 18 vacancies.

The deadline to test for the next hiring cycle is June 30, 2024.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled as needed.

Salary Information

$28.50-32.16 Hourly(DOE) includes .50 shift differential
