Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of service as a sworn fulltime police officer, not including field training time. 3 of those years should be uniformed in patrol.
BACKGROUND PROCESS INFORMATION:
The Fairbanks Police Department background process is comprehensive. Those applicants selected to go into the background process are expected to be active participants. The portions of the background process that require applicant participation include:
- Applicant interview
- Written psychological test
- Interview with a Psychologist
- Physical Examination performed by an authorized medical provider
- Urineanalysis-Drug Screen

Candidates will be required to take the Physical Assessment Test (PAT) within 90 days of taking the written test. You will be invited to take the PAT with Fairbanks PD or this may be completed remotely if you score high enough on your written test. There are five events that test an applicant’s level of physical fitness.
The minimum acceptable standard for each event is as follows:
- 300 Meter Run = 77 seconds
- Vertical Jump = 14.0”
- Push-Ups = 21 repetitions
- One Minute Sit-Ups = 15 repetitions
- 1.5 mile run = 17 minutes, 17 seconds

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The positions of this class are responsible for the protection of life and property through enforcing the statutes and laws; rendering emergency assistance to the public in a wide variety of situations; patrolling residential, rural and business areas of the City; performing standard crime and accident prevention duties; apprehending criminals; serving arrest warrants; issuing citations for violations of City ordinances and State statutes; identifying and recovering stolen property; investigating traffic accidents and crimes; and deciding whether to arrest or not, as well as when to use force or firearms. Shift assignments, which rotate, normally consist of patrol or traffic activities in a designated area of the City in a patrol car or on foot. Work involves an element of personal danger, and employees must exercise individual judgement and discretion in meeting emergencies and enforcing ordinances and laws. Experienced officers may be assigned to special duties with the Drug Investigation Unit, and provide field training to new police officers, or occasionally performing duties at a higher level classification for training purposes. During probation, new officers are expected to apply formal classroom and on-the-job training experiences to actual work situations. As experience and training is gained, the degree of direct supervision decreases. Assignments and general or special instructions are received from a superior officer, who reviews work occasionally while it is being performed or through records, personal inspection and discussions.

If a candidate is found to be in violation, then the person will have the option of having the tattoo or the visible portion thereof, removed at their own expense. TESTING IN WASHINGTON STATE CANCELED THROUGH MAY 31, 2020
All pre-employment tests in Washington State have been canceled until May 31, 2020 unless government restrictions are eased. With recent updates, facility closures, and government guidelines, this step is necessary and could be modified at any time. The health and safety of our customers, our staff, and their families is of the highest priority.
We will continue to evaluate developments and make changes to this policy as necessary. When we do resume testing, there will be plenty of events for everyone to test. We are in regular communication with our public safety agency partners, assessing alternatives to the traditional testing model and our testing policies. Any future updates will be posted on the PST website and our Facebook page.
If you have tested with PST in the past 12 months, there may be additional positions you are now eligible to add. Several departments have temporarily changed their testing policies due to the suspension in testing that COVID-19 has caused. FUTURE TEST REGISTRATION
We know that there will be testing in the future - we just don’t know when! We want you to be prepared for when testing begins again so we have created test events on our calendar that you can register for that will place you in a queue to be first notified. These tests are not “real” test events, they are essentially a holding area. You will be able to “reschedule” out of that event to any other event date/location at no cost. Registering now will also give you time to work on your Personal History Statement (PHS) so that your data will be ready and up-to-date to send to your departments once testing resumes.
