Community Information

The City of Coeur d’Alene has a population of approximately 57,728 and is located in the Northern Idaho Panhandle. Coeur d’Alene offers a true, four-season climate and is a resort city on the northern shore of scenic Lake Coeur d’Alene.

In addition to the natural beauty and waterfront beaches and trails of the City, there are several lakes within 50 miles providing beaches for swimming and boat ramps for water access. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the nearby local, state and federal parks for camping and hiking, numerous golf courses and five major winter ski areas which are all within 60 miles. Department Information

The Coeur d'Alene Fire Department provides Fire, Rescue & EMS services that exceeded 10,000 calls for service last year. The department operates out of (4) stations that includes (1) Ladder Truck Company, (3) Engine Companies,  (1) Fire Boat and (3) ALS Ambulances. Hiring Status

Coeur d'Alene Fire Department - Firefighter has 6 vacancies.

The deadline to test for the next hiring cycle is April 02, 2026.

We are establishing  firefighter eligibility lists for both entry-level firefighter and lateral firefighter/paramedics as required within our Civil Service Rules.

Lateral Firefighters who meet the criteria below do not need to take the PST. All others do need to submit a score.

Lateral Criteria: The approved lateral hire program is dependent on the following criteria:

  1. Must have a minimum of 1 year of completed firefighter work experience with a local Kootenai County Advanced Life Support (ALS) agency; OR
  2. Must have a minimum of 2 years of completed firefighter work experience with a state, county, or municipal agency; AND
  3. Must have a current Idaho State Paramedic licensure or have the ability to obtain it within 30 days of hire.

Salary Information

Current base hourly wage range is $21.52 - $33.11 per hour (56-hour workweek), increasing 3.5% October 2026 & 3.5% October 2027. Firefighters are eligible for service time increases per collective bargaining agreement as stated below:

Year 1: 8% increase
Year 2: 8% increase
Year 3: 8% increase
Year 4: 6% increase
Year 5: 9.5% increase and additional 5% if employee qualifies for senior pay

  • Current starting annual wage range for a 56-hour Firefighter/EMT is $62,666-$96,416
  • Current starting annual wage range for a 56-hour Firefighter/Advanced EMT is $65,433-99,183
  • Current starting annual wages range for a 56-hour Firefighter/Paramedic is $74,605-108,356

Additional hourly pay is available per CBA for FLSA, educational incentive, holiday pay, etc. Additional hourly pay is not included in above wages, holiday pay is an additional benefit paid to firefighters annually at employee's base wage * 264 hours (11 total holiday's).

Benefit Information

The City of Coeur d'Alene offers a very generous benefit package. This position falls under the Coeur d'Alene Firefighters Local No. 710. Below is a general outline but the CBA will address specifically negotiated benefits for represented fire employees.
