Important Information

To be eligible for the first review, submissions of all required documents and a sucessfully passed written exam  must be completed by July 31, 2026, with reviews continuing monthly thereafter.

Department Information

The District serves a 142 square mile area in and around Sequim. The population of the District is approximately 40,000. The eastern boundary extends approximately three miles into Jefferson County. The western boundary extends to the Deer Park area, just east of Port Angeles, and borders Clallam County Fire District 2 on the west. The District has six stations; three of those stations are staffed, three are volunteer. The District currently has 55 career suppression staff, 6 administrative staff, 4 miantenance division staff, 3 part-time staff and approximately 50 volunteers. Firefighter Paramedic

Position Description

FLSA Status: Non-exempt position represented by IAFF Local 2933

Nature and Purpose of Work

The Firefighter Paramedic is assigned to perform roles that support the Fire District’s mission of providing public safety services. Performing within the scope of the District’s policies and standard operating procedures, this is typically in the form of providing fire suppression, emergency medical, and rescue services; but may also include supporting the community through the performance of non- fire suppression activities such as public education and fire prevention. The primary function of the Firefighter Paramedic is to support the District’s efforts aimed at protecting the lives and property of the citizens within Fire District 3.

The Firefighter Paramedic fills a role that must maintain respectful working relationships with other District members, associate EMS providers, patients, and the public. They must carry out their duties in a collaborative manner that fosters the respect of fellow members, meets the District’s performance requirements, and provides effective program success. The Firefighter Paramedic’s conduct and workplace performance shall be guided by and remain consistent with the District’s Mission and Values. The Firefighter Paramedic’s ultimate duty is to assure the delivery of quality and professional service to the citizens within Fire District 3.

Supervision Received

Assigned to the District’s Operations Section, the Firefighter Paramedic works under the general policy direction of their assigned Captain for all matters related to their service delivery responsibilities, project assignments, performance appraisals, member relations, work related practices, performance effectiveness and responsiveness, and conformance with the District’s expectations, and discipline.

Supervision Exercised

The Firefighter Paramedic has no supervisory responsibility unless specifically granted for stipulated roles, projects, tasks, or events. The Firefighter Paramedic’s duties may require the coordination and oversight of work performed by co-workers. When supervisory responsibility is granted, the Firefighter Paramedic is expected to exercise sound judgment in providing the corresponding leadership, organization, and coordination.

Essential Job Functions

The Firefighter Paramedic’s principle duties include, but are not limited to the following duties and responsibilities, which are not listed in any particular order of importance or significance. The FirefighterParamedic shall be responsible for:


1. Responding to fire and emergency medical alarms according to District policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

2. Demonstrating flexibility in serving the needs of the District by assuming different work schedule changes.

3. Accurately and appropriately documenting all activity on proper forms as required by law and district regulations.

4. Assisting in training programs for District members and public classes when assigned.

5. Assisting in the fire prevention programs and maintenance of District equipment, vehicles, buildings, and grounds as assigned.

6. Attending routine and special training sessions to enhance the skills required for the position and keeping current on District, state, and nationally recognized methods and techniques.

7. Maintaining the physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the duties of the position.

8. Projecting an image of professionalism through appearance, cooperation, compatibility, punctuality and enthusiasm.

9. As they may participate in specialty teams such as wildland, technical rescue, rehab, hazardous materials, etc.

10. Performing other job-related duties as assigned by the Shift Captain.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

While requirements may represent the minimum levels of knowledge, skills and abilities, to perform this position successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities and aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently. The Firefighter Paramedic must possess good character and the ability to effectively work well with others as a contributing team member who is able to learn quickly and follow directions. They must have a good working knowledge of the District’s policies and standard operating procedures and the ability to work effectively under pressure as necessary. In addition, and as is commensurate and/or applicable to their assignment, the Firefighter Paramedic must also possess the skills and ability to:

1. Perform the Firefighter Paramedic functions as described herein.

Characteristics of a Successful Performer

The successfulFirefighter Paramedic must be an action-oriented individual with a passion for public service and patient care. They must be a person who can operate effectively within a demanding and stressful environment. To be successful, they must operate with a strong customer service orientation along with the ability to effectively respond to a broad range of fire department needs as well as the needs of the general public while operating in a culturally diverse community.

Physical Demands

The Firefighter Paramedic may be required to walk on uneven or slippery surfaces and may encounter emergency situations that may require rapid evacuation of an area in order to avoid personal injury or to provide assistance to another individual and must therefore have the physical ability to walk or run. The Firefighter Paramedic may be required to wear protective clothing weighing greater than 10 lbs. Their duties require the dexterity and coordination needed to operate heavy vehicles; lift, carry, and operate tools and equipment; handle and assemble fire equipment; and lift and carry objects in excess of 75 lbs. They must have the dexterity to stoop, bend, and climb in/out of vehicle cabs, as well as to access upper cabinets. They must possess sufficient visual acuity to read gauges and observe emergency scene conditions in a variety of lighting conditions, including bright light, low light, and low visibility conditions. The Firefighter Paramedic must have the ability to conduct coherent voice face-to-face communication as well as via portable radio and telephone.

Work Place Conditions

While performing the duties of this position,the Firefighter Paramedic must also be able to perform those physical activities normally encountered in an office environment, which includes sitting, reading, typing, talking, hearing and understanding face-to-face voice as well as phone communication, limited hand and arm motion, the general ability to be mobile, and all other physical activities as required for the performance of essential functions. Work is typically performed in any combination of 8, 10, 12, or 24 hour shifts.
