The area served by the Monument Fire District is centered around the Town of Monument and a vast area of unincorporated communities of El Paso County. Monument, Colorado, is a small town in the Northwest part of El Paso County, situated at an elevation of 7,320 feet and covering 12.47 square miles. The town is located between Denver and Colorado Springs, with the Pike National Forest, Colorado Springs, and the United States Air Force Academy as its adjacent borders. Just to the north is Douglas County, where the Larkspur Fire Protection District and the Franktown Fire Protection District are located along the northern border. The district covers a diverse mix of urban and rural areas and is rapidly growing in commercial, manufacturing, and residential activity. The Monument Fire District covers 62 square miles and serves a population of 45,000. The Monument Fire District has a mix of urban and rural areas. The district is currently almost evenly split, with 49% rural and 51% urban, with 94% of the district lies within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI).

Monument Fire District (MFD) is an Accredited Agency of the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI), and is one of two organizations in El Paso County to be accredited. The ongoing Accreditation process promotes excellence and continuous improvement, leading to improved service delivery for our citizens. Monument Fire District (the district) serves a community located in northern El Paso County, Colorado. The district covers a diverse area with a mix of urban and rural areas. Our boundaries are the Rampart Range/Palmer Lake to the West, Air Force Academy/Baptist/Hodgen Roads to the South, Black Forest Road to the East, and County Line Road to the North. In addition, we provide mutual aid to the United States Forest Service in the extreme western part of our district in the Mount Herman area. The district operates out of five fire stations and one administrative building. Operational staff works a 48/96 work schedule with 24 personnel assigned to each shift, staffing four engines, one tower-ladder, three ALS ambulances, one Squad, and one Battalion Chief. The additional apparatus includes water tenders, brush trucks, a snow cat, and a UTV. Significant investment has been made in fleet and facilities. All firehouses have been remodeled within the past five years, the oldest primary fire engine is two years old, and the oldest ambulance is currently three years old. A new training facility is being built behind Fire Station 1, and a new Fire Station 3 is currently under construction.

JOB SUMMARY:

Performs standard firefighting, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property. Under the supervision and direction of the fire district’s command structure, the firefighter/paramedic performs various technical work and labor required by the State of Colorado. This position requires the firefighter/paramedic to respond to emergent and non-emergent medical services in compliance with the medical protocols of the fire district’s medical director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•Perform forcible entry while utilizing tools and equipment.
•Maintain medical equipment and ensure proper amounts of medical supplies, medications, and accountability for controlled medications in their station.
•Participate in fire training activities, including fire prevention, fire-fighting tactics, search and rescue, disaster response, hydraulics, emergency medicine, and other related areas.
•Perform routine building, grounds maintenance, and custodial work at the fire station.
•Safely inspect, carry, set up, operate, and maintain firefighting equipment, including hoses, ladders, safety equipment, air packs, hand tools, power tools, smoke ejectors, and other related ventilation equipment.
•Ability to tie ropes for rescues and various knots.
•Wear a respirator (SCBA) to safely perform firefighter operations or rescues in conditions where smoke or gases may be present for up to one hour.
•Conduct searches in confined spaces.
•Perform water and ice rescue.
•Participate in wildland fire fighting and prevention.
•Take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances, and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Be responsible for the safety of yourself, others, materials, and equipment. Use all safety equipment.
•Operate a motor vehicle, including light-duty vehicles, ambulances, Type 6s, and water tenders.
•Drive assigned apparatus on emergency calls to the level trained.
•Participate effectively in after-fire clean-up, salvage, and construction work as required.
•Maintain current required certifications.
•Subject to callback or holdover.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

The Firefighter/Paramedic works under the supervision of the Company Officer.

EXPERIENCE/CREDENTIALS REQUIRED:

•High School Diploma or G. E. D.
•Hold and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License.
•Hold and maintain a CDFPC Firefighter II certification (minimum).
•Hold and maintain CDFPC Driver/Operator Certification.
•Hold and maintain a CDPHE EMT-Paramedic and CPR certification (minimum).
•IV Certified.
•PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals.
•Hold and maintain a Forest Service “Red Card” S130/190 (minimum).
•Hold and maintain a CDFPC Hazmat awareness/Hazmat operations certification (minimum).
•Hold and maintain NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800.
•Current CPAT upon hire.
