Community Information

Tukwila is just under 10 square miles with a residential population of approximately 20,000 which includes an extremely diverse population with over 80 languages spoken amongst our residents. That daytime population grows to upwards of 150,000+ during the day with visitors and businesses that are open. Located just minutes from Sea-Tac International Airport, Tukwila is home to one of the nation's largest retail complexes and the largest mall in the Pacific Northwest. We have a thriving business community that includes 3,000 retail, office, distribution, and heavy and light manufacturing businesses. 

Department Information

The Tukwila Police Department is compromised of a budgeted force of 77 commissioned officers and 19 support staff members and handles an average of 31,000 calls a year for service. The department is led by Chief of Police Eric Drever. We are fortunate to have a supportive command staff and supportive elected officials and a supportive community that works with us to make Tukwila safe for everyone. The Tukwila community is also one that is extremely supportive of their police department and actively partners with us for keeping the neighborhoods, schools and businesses safe. 

Officer wellness is a priority for us. Patrol officers enjoy a set schedule with the same three days off every week and every other Saturday off to be able to focus on their mental health, families and life outside of work. Officers are also afforded the opportunity to workout on-duty in our state of the art gym in our brand new police station that opened in September of 2020. We promote a family atmosphere throughout all levels of our ranks where officers feel valued and their accomplishments recognized by the department, elected officials and the community. 

Upon completion of a 12-month probation, officers are eligible to apply for positions with our Major Crimes Unit (MCU), Tukwila Anti-Crime (TAC) Unit, Traffic Unit, Community Police Team (CPT), School Resource Officer (SRO), Public Information Officer (PIO), Training Coordinator and collateral assignments such as Valley SWAT, Civil Disturbance Unit (CDU), Honor Guard, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (EVOC) Instructor and more.

There is no mandatory COVID-19 vaccine requirement to join our team.

With upcoming retirements in the spring of 2024, we anticipate having approximately three (3) entry level officer positions that we will be looking to fill at that time. 


Salary Information

Current 2023 Pay Scale. All posted wages will increase in 2024 100% of CPI

Year 1 $90,561 (Entry Level)

There are additional pay opportunities via overtime and uniformed off-duty work at $90/hour which is scheduled and run by the Tukwila Police Officers Guild. You will also have 490 hours of paid time off that can be used or cashed out at 100% of your hourly rate of pay.

The following are automatic and potential disqualifiers. Applicants should not apply to our agency if they indicate any of the automatic disqualifiers. Potential disqualifiers will be considered on a case by case basis.

Automatic Any criminal traffic conviction within the past 5 years. Violation examples include, but are not limited to: Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Reckless Driving, Negligent Driving, or Hit and Run Driving.
Automatic Suspension or revocation of your driver’s license (for any traffic violations) within 5 years of the date of employment application.
Automatic Any more than two criminal convictions for traffic related offenses.
Drug Usage
Automatic As an adult, convicted of any felony drug crime.
Automatic Marijuana use within 12-months of the date of application will be reviewed on a case by case basis.  Any excessive use is an automatic disqualifier. 
Automatic Used hallucinogens (includes GHB and ecstasy; excludes mushrooms), cocaine, methamphetamine, or opiates within the last 10 years.
Automatic Usage of any other illegal drug, including steroids and prescription abuse, will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Automatic Have illegally used 4 or more different controlled substances, including marijuana, in the last 10 years from time of application.
Automatic Have at any time manufactured or cultivated illegal drugs (including marijuana) for the purpose of sale or distribution.
