Wyoming Highway Patrol is establishing an eligibility list for its next hiring cycle. The testing deadline for the next hiring cycle March 15, 2024, by 5 pm. You must be available for additional screening at WHP in Cheyenne, WY, on March 18-20, 2024.

    • WHP will conduct additional agency screening in Cheyenne, WY, on March 18-20, 2024 for the next hiring cycle.

    Hiring Status

    Wyoming Highway Patrol - Lateral Trooper has 14 vacancies.

    The Wyoming Highway Patrol conducts two testing cycles per year and will fill vacancies on a need by need basis.

    Salary Information

    Starting pay for Trooper I is $29.30 hr. Starting salary for Trooper II with Advanced Peace Officer Certification is $32.81 hr.

    Uncorrected visual acuity greater than 20/100 must be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of soft contact lenses or glasses.

    Uncorrected visual acuity between 20/20 and 20/100 may be corrected to 20/20 or better through the use of hard or soft contact lenses or glasses.
    Basic Law Enforcement Academy Certification Applicant must possess the Basic Certification through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission and possess a "Advanced Peace Officer Certificate" or an equivalent from another state, as recognized by Wyoming P.O.S.T based on years of service and training hours. This will be determined by the Wyoming P.O.S.T. Commission.

    Wyoming Highway Patrol - Lateral Trooper Disqualifiers

    The following are automatic and potential disqualifiers. Applicants should not apply to our agency if they indicate any of the automatic disqualifiers. Potential disqualifiers will be considered on a case by case basis.

    Automatic Suspension of driver's license within past 3 years.
    Automatic Conviction of a felony in this State or an offense in another State which would be a felony if committed in this State.

    Conviction of an offense involving moral turpitude.

    Conviction of any offense involving the unlawful sale, manufacture, or production of a controlled substance.

    Conviction of any offense involving the unlawful use, sale, manufacture, production or possession of prescription drugs.

    Conviction of one D.U.I. within the previous four (4) years, or two D.U.I. convictions within the previous ten (10) years, or three D.U.I. convictions in a lifetime.

    Has any pending criminal proceedings or is under investigation for a crime.

    Has a documented history of physical violence, or has been convicted of a crime of “Domestic Violence” as defined by 18 U.S.C. § 921 (a)(33)(A).

    Maintains an ongoing relationship with individual(s) who have been convicted of felony crimes and who are reputed to be involved in recent or current felonious activity.

    Any violation of public trust while previously employed in law enforcement or other public service.

    A recent or current affiliation with, and/or support of, any organization or group which advocates the violent overthrow of the State or of the United States Government, or whose professed goals are contrary to the interest of public safety and welfare.

    Deceptive results of a polygraph examination regarding the applicant’s background.

    Evidence that the applicant has willfully provided false or misleading information during the application process, in his/her written application or Personal History Statement, or has cheated during any portion of the testing process.

    Any revocation, suspension, denial, or disqualification of a driver’s license or driving privileges where the suspension, denial, or disqualification ended within a three year period prior to the start of the testing process.

    Any conclusion by an oral interview panel that the applicant is unsuited for police work.

    Three prior rejections from the recruit testing and hiring process as the result of a failed background investigation, an unsuitable psychological assessment rating or any combination thereof.

    Potential Commission of an undiscovered felony.

    Conviction of a gross misdemeanor in this State or any offense in another State which would be a gross misdemeanor if committed in this State.

    Conviction of an offense resulting in incarceration.

    Conviction of D.U.I. more than four (4) years preceding the date of application.

    Has had a driver’s license suspended, revoked or canceled within the last three years, or has had two or more suspensions, cancellations or revocations.

    Three or more hazardous moving traffic violations during the three year period preceding the application date.

    Fraudulent use of unemployment or sick leave benefits in the previous ten years.

    Prior termination for cause from a law enforcement agency.

    Separation from any branch of the United States Armed Forces under less than “honorable” conditions, or has separated honorably form the Armed Forces for reasons of unsuitability or misconduct.

    Unfavorable recommendations from past or present references, employers, creditors or landlords.

    A demonstrated lack of financial responsibility.

    A history of sporadic or inconsistent employment.

    A conclusion by any Physician, Psychiatrist or Psychologist which questions the applicant’s suitability to perform the duties of a State Trooper.

    A history of alcohol or controlled substance use which has hampered job performance at any time during the five years immediately preceding the date of application.

    Conviction of any offense involving the unlawful use or possession of a controlled substance.

    Use of marijuana within the last two years from date of application.

    Use of illicit drugs within the last five years from date of application.

    Sold, produced, cultivated or transported marijuana or any other controlled substance.

    Any other factor, or combination of factors, which would limit or prohibit the applicant from functioning successfully as a member of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, or which would be detrimental to the Department.
