Department Information

The Westport Police Department is a full service police department that serves a residential population and a large seasonal tourist population. The department consists of 7 full-time sworn personnel and 2 civilian records personnel. We are looking for individuals who would enjoy the challenges and close knit feeling of police work in a coastal tourist community.

Job Description

Duties

  • Patrol assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity.
  • Respond promptly to calls for service, emergencies, and incidents.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of crimes, including gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
  • Prepare detailed reports on incidents, arrests, and investigations.
  • Enforce traffic laws and regulations; issue citations as necessary.
  • Engage with the community to build trust and foster positive relationships.
  • Utilize surveillance and patrol techniques to monitor suspicious activities.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of applicable state and federal laws as well as municipal ordinances. Demonstrate the ability to apply them in the course of your duties.

  • Proficient in report writing to document incidents accurately.
  • Strong understanding of criminal investigation techniques.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely under various conditions; valid driver's license required.
  • Excellent communication skills for effective interaction with the public and other law enforcement personnel.

Summary - The City of Westport has openings for either a Lateral/Exceptional Lateral or Entry Level Police

Officer.

Lateral - This position is a full-time non-exempt position. To qualify, candidates must meet the following requirements: must be a

U.S. citizen; must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a police officer and have worked as such

at least 24 months within the last 36 months serving in a City, County, or State police agency in Washington,

and must have graduated from a State sanctioned police academy. A driver's abstract of records and WA

driver's license are required prior to appointment. To apply, candidates must submit a completed City of

Exceptional Lateral - This position is a full-time non-exempt position. To qualify, candidates must meet the same requirements

as a Lateral police officer with the exception of time worked as a certified police officer. Current, sworn

Police Officers who work full-time for another police agency, and have completed the Basic Law Enforcement

Academy from a Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission sanctioned or out of state recognized

police academy, but have worked less than the two (2) year requirement may be considered an Exceptional

Lateral applicant. A driver's abstract of records and WA driver's license are required prior to appointment. To

Salary Information

Starting salary: $6,954 - $7,789 per month (as of January 2026)
