Department Information

The Washington County Jail, located in Hillsboro, Oregon, is a modern, direct-supervision facility operated by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.  It serves as the only jail in Washington County and has a capacity of 572 beds. Our team is composed of 160 full-time sworn deputies.

WCSO is proud to offer numerous full-time specialty units that provide critical services, including:

These assignments allow deputies to apply specialized training and develop deep expertise in areas that directly impact public safety and community well-being.

In addition to full-time roles, deputies have the chance to participate in a wide range of collateral or part-time assignments, gaining valuable experience and contributing to mission-critical operations. These include:

Job Description

PURPOSE

Train in basic concepts of corrections, learn and carry out procedures, rules and regulations of the jail, including booking, prisoner care, security and transportation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives close supervision from a Senior Corrections Officer.

Supervision is not normally a function of this class.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Attend Oregon Board on Public Safety Standards and Training Basic Academy; receive instruction in major areas of corrections; complete assigned written and performance examinations.

2. Learn policies and procedures of maintaining jail security and carry them out; monitor surveillance equipment, control exits to jail, search cells for contraband.

3. Learn policies and procedures in booking new inmates and carry them out; record personal data, make inventory of belongings, make cell assignments, examine prisoners for injuries, drugs and weapons; take fingerprints and mug photographs.

4. Learn to prepare and file intake and release forms and perform related tasks.

5. Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment; enforce a safe workplace; establish a culture of teamwork and communication; create a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion; and actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

6. Transport inmates to and from various courts and jails.

7. Learn to attend to the personal needs of the inmates, feeding, clothing and sanitation; dispense prescribed medicines and reports medical problems to jail nurse; arrange visiting periods and phone calls for prisoners.

8. Learn to arrange and receive authorized visitors and to check incoming and outgoing mail.

9. Train in instructing inmates on regulations; supervising inmates on work release and recreation; and in maintaining control in general.

10. Train to qualify to operate breathalyzer and sobriety tests.

11. Train in processing of mental petitions.

12. Perform other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to learn modern corrections practices in the care and treatment of inmates in penal institutions, ability to learn criminal law, the judicial system and the statutes on jails; ability to learn booking procedures including fingerprinting and photography, ability to handle difficult prisoners with patience and firmness and by physical force; ability to deal tactfully with the public; ability to withstand verbal abuse; ability to perform effectively in stressful or emergency situations; ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals, whether members of the public or coworkers, from diverse groups and backgrounds; ability to perform mathematical computations; and ability to accept constructive criticism within a training environment.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is continuously hiring jail deputies.

Salary Information

$77K - $105K annually plus incentives and overtime.

  • Merit Increases – salary step increases granted upon satisfactory performance and completion of 26 qualified pay periods.
  • Bilingual Pay (for bilingual designated positions) – 5% of the base pay rate, or a flat rate of seventy-five ($75) per pay period, whichever is greater.
  • Incentive Pay – 2 to 8% based on certification levels, training, college education, and years of service.
  • Premium Pay for various special assignments (Field Training Officer, Tactical Negotiations Team – SWAT, Motorcycle Officer, Corrections Emergency Response Team, and K-9.
  • Overtime and/or compensatory time allowances for overtime, callback, and court appearance.
  • Uniforms include initial tailoring, duty gear, and a firearm.
  • Clothing allowance – $75 per month, if assigned to plain clothes duty full-time.
  • Footwear allowance – $150 per year.
