Important Information

The La Grange Fire Department is seeking a diverse pool of applicants for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Our goal is to attract, develop, and retain the best and brightest from all walks of life and backgrounds. The testing window will run from June 29, 2026 through August 2, 2026, and candidates must complete testing within this timeframe.

Step 1: Initial Eligibility Register
Following the testing window, the Village will establish an Initial Eligibility Register of candidates who achieve the minimum passing score. Candidates will have 10 days to submit documentation for preference points consideration.

Step 2: Final Eligibility Register & Interviews
Preference points will be applied and a Final Eligibility Register will be established. Candidates will participate in oral interviews with the La Grange Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. The Final Eligibility Register will be posted publicly and will remain valid for two years.

Step 3: Selection & Pre-Employment Screening
Candidates selected from the Final Eligibility Register must successfully complete all required pre-employment screenings.

*The examination process includes a mandatory orientation program. Applicants must review the mandatory orientation video and acknowledge that they have done so by completing the acknowledgment in the Position Documents section of the application.*

Located at the crossroads of La Grange Road, Ogden Avenue, and the Metra BNSF line, over 50,000 vehicles, commuters, and pedestrians stream through downtown La Grange every day.

Department Information

The La Grange Fire Department provides fire, rescue, and EMS services, including ALS transportation, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Department also provides and receive mutual aid services for several of our surrounding communities. It is a fully career department staffed with 19 sworn personnel assigned to six shifts on a 24/48 schedule. Each shift is led by a Captain, supported by one Lieutenant and four firefighters, who are members of IAFF Local 2338, with a minimum of five personnel on duty at all times.

The mission of the La Grange Fire Department is the preservation of life and property of citizens and visitors of the Village of La Grange from fire and medical emergencies by maintaining the readiness of personnel, the fire station, and equipment to promptly respond to a citizen’s request for emergency, rescue, or both accidental and natural disasters. This shall be accomplished through fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services, fire prevention, code enforcement, training, and public education.

Job Description

Firefighter Minimum Requirements:

  • Be a United States Citizen
  • No felony convictions
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent
  • Current EMT-B certification at time of application (Note: At the time of hire the applicant must possess a certified EMT-P Paramedic License from the State of Illinois)
  • Be at least 21 and under 35 years of age at the time of application, or as otherwise provided by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act (65 ILCS 5/10-2.1)
  • Submit proof of a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and approved Ladder Climb card from a licensed Agency. The Ladder Climb card must be dated within one year of the application deadline (valid if issued 8/2/2025 - 8/2/2026)
  • Must possess a valid and current CPAT/Ladder Climb card at the time of appointment
  • The La Grange Fire Department requires all employees to enter into an expense reimbursement agreement upon hire

Preference Point Information*:

Points may be given only if a proper and valid claim for preference points has been made, as well as supporting documentation submitted.

Veteran’s Preference- maximum of 5 points if:

  • Persons who were engaged in the military service of the United States for a period of at least one year of active duty and who were honorably discharged therefrom,
  • Persons who are now or have been members on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service

Educational/Optional Preference- maximum of 4 points (not cumulative) if:

  • Associate’s degree in fire service or emergency medical services – 1 point
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field – 2 points
  • Master’s degree in any field – 4 points

Experience Preference- maximum of 5 points if:

  • Employment by a municipality as a part-time/paid-on-call certified Firefighter II, Illinois/Nationally Licensed EMT-B or EMT-I (or any combination of those capacities) - .5 points per year (max. 5 pts.)
  • Employment by a municipality as a part-time/paid-on-call certified Firefighter III and Illinois/Nationally Licensed EMT-P – 1 point per year (max. 5 pts.)
  • Employment by a municipality or fire protection district as a full-time firefighter or firefighter-paramedic for at least two years – 5 points

* A candidate may not receive the full amount of preference points under this subsection if the amount of points awarded would place the candidate before a veteran on the eligibility list. If more than one candidate receiving experience preference points is prevented from receiving all of their points due to not being allowed to pass a veteran, the candidates shall be placed on the list below the veteran in rank order based on the totals received if all points under this subsection were to be awarded. Any remaining ties on the list shall be determined by lottery.

Candidates may receive a conditional offer of employment and participate in additional post-offer screenings and examinations, including but not limited to: polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, character and background investigation, credit check, medical examination, and drug/alcohol screening. Candidates must receive a satisfactory evaluation on each screening or examination in order to proceed in the selection process. Failure to achieve a satisfactory evaluation on any screening or examination shall result in immediate disqualification from further consideration.
