Community Information

The City of Toppenish is in the Yakima Valley and has a population of approximately 9,100. The Yakima Valley boasts 300 days of sun! Within a 60-minute drive to the foot of two spectacular mountain passes, White Pass and Chinook Pass, are hiking, fishing, and abundant hunting as well as winter sports. Known for the many wineries throughout the Yakima Valley, breweries are now making their way onto the scene. If one runs out of things to do, Toppenish is only a two and half-hour drive to Seattle and a three-hour drive to Portland, Oregon. With the Columbia Gorge only 60-minutes away, fishing and windsurfing are abundant, along with other various outdoor activities.

The Toppenish Fire Department (TFD) is a full-service 24/7 organization offering dynamic opportunities in fire suppression, rescue operations, fire prevention, and emergency medical services. We are committed to delivering high-quality service to the public.

Our mission is to minimize the loss of life, property, and human suffering caused by natural or man-made disasters in the City of Toppenish and surrounding areas. We strive to achieve this through the delivery of exceptional fire, rescue, prevention, and emergency medical services.

The TFD is a combination career and volunteer organization committed to protecting our community with professionalism and dedication. Our team includes a Deputy Chief, four career Firefighters, and 25 dedicated volunteers.

Operating out of a single station at 514 West Second Avenue, TFD provides fire suppression, basic emergency medical services, and a variety of non-emergency services. We proudly serve a 2.4-square-mile area within the Toppenish city limits and are the only 24-hour staffed municipal fire department within a 20-mile radius.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as oral board interviews are conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur. PST applications are held until the oral board is conducted.

Salary Information

Effective 1/1/2025: $5,543 - $6,521 per month (3 steps)

Longevity and Other Incentive Pay Premiums:

  • Longevity Pay after 5 years to over 15 years of completed service ranging from 1.5%-4.5% of base wage/per mo.;
  • Additional Department Authorized Training Officer Pay of $300.00 per month;
  • Additional 2.5% of base wage/per mo. for employees certified by the City to receive Bilingual Pay for Spanish language and $50.00/per mo. for any other language or interpreter skill as approved by the Director, according to terms and conditions of Bilingual Pay Program established by the City; and
  • Additional pay incentives based on position as noted in Appendix B of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Benefit Information

The City offers aggregate service credit for vacation accrual and longevity, education incentive, bilingual and other specialty pay, excellent training opportunities, family and domestic partner health benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and employee assistance program, paid vacation and sick leave, and holiday pay hours.  Annual 72-hour vacation cash-out.  Retirement benefits are provided through Washington State Law Enforcement Officers’ and Fire Fighters’ Retirement II System (LEOFF II).
