Your PST-administered written exam must be completed by September 13, 2026.

You must have successfully passed a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) conducted by Public Safety Testing (PST) or National Testing Network (NTN) within the last 12 months and, if conducted by NTN, you must provide proof of certification when submitting your formal application packet to South Kitsap Fire & Rescue (do not submit proof to PST).

You must send proof of NTN CPAT and  a completed South Kitsap Fire and Rescue application either by mail (ATTN: Alyssa Bass) or via email to abass@skfr.org by 1600 on September 13, 2026.

South Kitsap Fire & Rescue (SKFR) is located in Port Orchard, WA and currently provides service to the Orchard, Heights, Retsil, Manchester, Olalla, Burley, Glenwood, Sunnyslope, Navy Yard City and Gorst neighborhoods and communities. Altogether, our fire district covers 117 square miles and serve approximately 80,925 citizens. With a total of 11 fire stations, 7 serve as career stations and 2 serve as stations ran by volunteers who are part of the South Kitsap Fire & Rescue Volunteer Association (SKFRVA).

Our administration building is located at Station 8 and is the central office for the fire district's administrative division and management team. South Kitsap Fire and Rescue has over 150 personnel and is comprised of leadership, administrative, training, community programs, operations and volunteer staff members.

SKFR is led by the Fire Chief & elected Board of Fire Commissioners who oversee our 2 deputy chiefs followed by our 3 division chiefs, 3 battalion chiefs and administrative office staff. The organization operates in two sections: the Emergency Services section, which coordinates our career and volunteer firefighter programs and fire prevention responses. And the Administrative Services section, which manages physical resources, IT, human resources, and administrative support. This includes maintaining facilities, vehicles, and providing essential equipment, tools, and uniforms to all members.

Department Information

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue employs 9 Engine Companies, 1 Ladder Company, 4 Medic Units and 6 Aid Units. The Operations Division includes the coordination of our paid staff of 112 and also utilizes over 50 volunteer firefighters. These personnel are stationed throughout the district at one of the six 24-hour staffed stations and six volunteer stations. As South Kitsap Fire and Rescue prepares for its future, our goal is to provide the most effective and efficient level of service possible within the limits of our available resources. The settings for these stations include waterfront, urban, suburban and truck communities.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue will be hiring 2 new hires to start January 2027 . Conditional offers of employment will include successfully passing a driver’s background check, criminal background check, background investigation, psychological exam,  and medical exam to include drug testing.


Salary Information

Firefighter wage range is Entry FF $7,362.27 per month, depending on qualifications, plus benefits.

Benefit Information

Health Care: WFCA PPO Plus plan, the District will pay 100% of the employee’s premium costs and 97% premiums costs for employee’s eligible insured dependents.

Kelly Days: 16 Kelly days per year.

Vacation: 12 hours per month (increases with years of service).

Sick leave: 9 days per year.
