Important Information

The mission of the Prosser Police Department is to protect the lives, rights and quality of life of all the residents and visitors we serve with honor and integrity. The men and women of the department are fully committed to accomplishing this mission by achieving four fundamental objectives, listed below.

·Crime Prevention: To provide a proactive and educational approach to reducing crime. Our primary function is to prevent crime. Officers must be in the right places, at the right times, doing the right things.

·Crime Control: To provide a rapid and professional response to confront crime as it occurs. We are committed to respond appropriately when crime occurs.

·Community Involvement: To create an excellent partnership with the community through exceptional communication and transparency. We realize that crime problems can only be effectively addressed in partnership with the community. We have a duty and a responsibility to maintain a relationship with the public that reflects the tradition that "the police are the public and the public are the police."

·Team Building: To create an excellent work environment so we can recruit and develop an exceptional team. We realize that we must create excellence from within.

Community Information

Prosser is located on the Yakima River between Yakima and Tri-Cities. The location is ideal for those wanting the convenience of city life with the benefits of rural living. I-82 provides a short commute to either Yakima or Tri-Cities. The main industries in the area are agriculturally based. Of course, the wine industry is a major draw to the valley and brings visitors from the entire region. The school system has a reputation for being one of the best in the area, and the Prosser Mustangs have been to the state football championships several times in the last 12 or 13 years. There are numerous higher education facilities within a 30 minute drive. Columbia Basin Community College, WSU Tri-Cities, Yakima Valley Community College and Heritage College are all very close. The weather is mild most of the year, allowing for a wide variety of crops to be grown. Some type of fruit or vegetable is being harvested from June through October. Recreation opportunities include boating activities on both the Yakima and Columbia Rivers. The Snake River is also just a short drive away. There are several major ski areas within driving distance and golf courses abound. There are many adult and youth sports programs and the City’s Parks and Rec division offers community schools during the winter.

Department Information

The Prosser Police Department has thirteen commissioned Police Officers, a Records Clerk/Administrative Assistant and a part time Administrative Secretary. The Officers include the Chief of Police, three Patrol Sergeants, and a School Resourse Officer (SRO). Currently, the Officers are working twelve-hour shifts. Because the Department is small, Officers are afforded many opportunities that are not available in larger agencies. Officers are expected to gain expertise in peripheral duties and then train fellow Officers. Thus, an Officer may be assigned road duty, but will also be able to operate an evidence room, teach self-defense, qualify other officers in marksmanship, or investigate a major crime scene.
