Department Information

The Port Angeles Fire Department is currently recruiting to establish an eligibility list as positions become open within our department in 2023.

The Port Angeles Fire Department is a professional, progressive and innovative public safety agency working to become an integral part of the lives of the citizens it serves. Its fundamental mission is to improve the quality of life for the citizens and visitors of the City while providing a broad range of services designed to save life and property. The Port Angeles Fire Department is responsible for emergency response in the areas of emergency medical, fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials, rescue, and disaster management and planning. In 2022, staff responded to over 5,834 911 calls for service. Port Angeles Fire Department is a combination department with 26 career and 15 volunteer members.

Our Department is growing. We anticipate hiring multiple Firefighter/EMTs that desire to become Firefighter/Paramedics. Trainees' must complete the Department selected paramedic program. There are no individual cost for this training and trainees receive full benefits throughout the training period.

The Port Angeles Fire Department is currently establishing an eligibility list as postions become available.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled in accordance with the City of Port Angeles Civil Service rules.

Salary Information


Upon completion of the Paramedic Training Program:

2022 Salary Range: $77,194-$104,989 per year (2022 Salary Scale + Reduction of Hours Pay).  * Currently in contract negotiations.  Anticipated wage increases for 2023 (retroactive), 2024, and 2025.

Benefit Information

Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage. Other benefits include a deferred compensation program, section 125 flexible-spending accounts, life insurance, short and long-term disability, paid vacation, holidays and sick leave. Retirement benefits are provided through Washington State Law Enforcement Officers’ and Fire Fighters Retirement System (LEOFF II)

Candidates must have successfully completed a CPAT within the previous 12 months to be considered. 

If CPAT is from another testing agency a copy of the certificate must be submitted to PAFD prior to the oral interview. 

Condition of hire includes successful completion of the CPAT.

Prior Experience Requirement

Two years education and experience as an Firefighter/EMT. Experience may be combined with related college coursework in Emergency Medicine or Fire Science to add up to the two years.
