Incorporated in 1966, Lacey is a young, progressive, and growing community. With a Council/Manager form of government, it is a full service City, with the exception of Fire, which is contracted. The City encompasses approximately 17 square miles and has a population of 50,170. Situated on the southern end of Puget Sound, Lacey is near beautiful ocean beaches, lakes, and mountains offering unlimited outdoor recreation. Lacey's proximity to the state capital allows cultural and educational opportunities normally not associated with smaller urban areas. Department Information

The Lacey Police Department provides a wide range of services on behalf of the Lacey community including citizen outreach, collaboration with schools, managing crime prevention programs, and investigating major felony crimes.  The public and the police work together to ensure the overall safety of the community.  This partnership is critical in maintaining the City of Lacey’s high quality of life, allowing the Lacey Police Department to proactively respond to emerging issues confronting the community.  

The Department prides itself in excellent customer service and a low crime rate.  This is due to the professionalism and training of the men and women who wear the uniform, and from the willingness of Lacey citizens to get involved and report criminal activity affecting their community.  The Lacey Police Department will continue to strive to meet the needs of the community and enforce laws in a uniform and fair manner to preserve and maintain the safety of our neighborhoods, schools and businesses.

The Department structure includes a Chief, Deputy Chief, 2 Commanders, 8 Sergeants, 46 Police Officers, and 9.5 support personnel. 

In addition to primary assignments, the Department also has opportunities for Officers to become certified Instructors in Defensive Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, Tactical, Fair and Impartial Policing, Implicit Bias, Police Training, and Less Lethal Weapons.  Various units, teams, and programs include: Community Resource, Traffic, Detectives, School Resource Officers, Field Training, Hostage Negotiation, SWAT, Dive/Rescue, Drug Recognition, Accident Investigation, Boat/Marine Patrol, Bike Patrol, and volunteers (Lacey Resource Unit and Explorers).

The eligibility list is a list of candidates, which are ranked utilizing a combination of both the written and oral board scores.  As openings occur, applicants on the eligibility list may be contacted to participate in the background phase of the hiring process.

Benefit Information

Officers receive a generous employer contribution toward employee and dependent coverages for medical, dental, and vision; generous sick leave and vacation benefits; employer paid life and disability insurance; and are eligible to participate in the City's deferred compensation plans.  Other benefits include 11 paid holidays, 10.7 hour workdays, a 5-4/5-4/5-5 work schedule, and education premium pay.  Officers do not pay into social security and are represented by the Lacey Police Guild.

The following are automatic and potential disqualifiers. Applicants should not apply to our agency if they indicate any of the automatic disqualifiers. Potential disqualifiers will be considered on a case by case basis.

Automatic Use of any illegal substances while employed in a criminal justice capacity (illicit drugs).
Automatic Use of heroin, methamphetamines, cocaine, LSD, PCP, or illegal opiodes within the seven (7) years immediately preceding the date of application.
Potential Use of or experimentation with hallucinogens (such as MDMA, Psilocybin, Peyote, etc.), other than those listed under the automatic disqualifiers.
