The Hinsdale Police Department serves the residents and businesses of the Village of Hinsdale in DuPage County. Operating from a single, modern police facility, the department provides responsive and proactive policing to one of the most engaged communities in the Chicago suburbs.

The department is a close-knit team made up of 18 police officers, 5 sergeants, one Deputy Chief, and one Chief of Police. This structure allows officers to work closely together, build strong leadership relationships, and take part in departmental initiatives. Deputy Chief Tom Lillie began employment with the department in 2001and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2015. Chief Brian King joined the department in 2017 and is widely respected throughout the region for his leadership and commitment to professional policing. In 2025, the Chief is serving as the appointed President of the DuPage County Chiefs of Police Association, reflecting the department’s strong reputation among neighboring agencies.

Hinsdale officers work 12-hour shifts, providing consistent patrol coverage while supporting a healthy work-life balance. Salary Information

The Hinsdale Police Department offers a competitive salary and benefits package designed to attract and retain high-quality police officers. Beginning May 1, 2026, the starting salary is $84,975 with a structured step plan that increases to $128,250 at the top step. Officers receive regular step increases along with opportunities for overtime, specialty assignments, and longevity pay as their careers progress.

Patrol officers work a 12-hour schedule that provides consistent coverage and meaningful time off between work cycles. Typical patrol shifts are 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Officers assigned to patrol generally work an 80-hour schedule within a 14-day work cycle, supporting both operational effectiveness and work-life balance.

The Village provides department-issued uniforms and equipment, with replacement items supplied through the department’s uniform and quartermaster program. Detectives and juvenile officers receive an annual clothing allowance. The department is well funded and equipped, and the Village continues to invest in training, equipment, and officer wellness to ensure personnel have the tools and support needed to serve the Hinsdale community.

The Village of Hinsdale offers a comprehensive and competitive health benefits package designed to support employees and their families. Medical coverage is provided through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and includes multiple plan options such as a PPO plan, a high-deductible health plan with a Health Savings Account option, and an HMO plan. At the time of filing an application for any entry level position in the Police Department, an applicant for appointment must be less than 35 years old, except as provided in Subsections B.3 and B.4 of this Section. A veteran shall be allowed to exceed the maximum age set forth herein by the number of years served on active military duty, but by no more than 10 years of active military duty pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6(a) and 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-14.

An applicant for an original appointment with the Police Department must be a citizen of the United States or must be legally authorized to work in the United States. under federal law or is an individual against whom immigration action has been deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under the federal Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6

Section 3.12 Preference Claims

A. Qualification. An applicant for original appointment to the Police Department may receive preference points if that applicant qualifies for and claims those points under this Section. Not more than a total of five preference points may be awarded to any applicant for original appointment to the Police Department. Those points shall be given only if a proper and valid claim for a preference has been made and only if the standards for such preferences have been met under the Act and these Rules.

Preference points shall be awarded to applicants for original appointment to the Police Department as provided for in 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-8 & 9, as amended from time to time.

B. Available Preference Claims. Preference points for applicants for original appointment to the Police Department may be awarded for active military service, education, and certain law enforcement and firefighter experience as provided in Sections 10-2.1-8 and 10-2.1-9 of the Act. 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-8 and 5/10-2.1-9. Applicants who have been awarded a certificate attesting to their successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Training Course, as provided in the Illinois Police Training Act, 50 ILCS 705/1 et seq., may be given preference in appointment over non-certified applicants.

C. Time and Method of Claiming Preference. Each applicant who may claim preference points under this Section shall submit his or her claim for that preference in writing to the Board within the time frame set by the Board.

Body Decorations

Tattoos Prohibited. No person shall be eligible to apply for a position in the Police Department if that person has a tattoo on the head, face, scalp, neck or on the hands from the wrists to the fingertips.
