The Arlington Heights Police Department continuously accepts applications for entry level police officers and is actively hiring for vacant positions. Entry-level applications are accepted on a continual/rolling basis.

The next Entry-Level Eligibility list will be certified by the Arlington Heights Board of Fire and Police Commissioners the week of October 5th, 2026. ALL TEST RESULTS, PREFERENCE POINTS, AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 11:59pm on October 4th, 2026 for review and in order to earn your place on the Eligibility List. Any applicant not meeting the above deadline may be considered for future eligibility certification. The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners reviews applications multiple times throughout the year. 

Entry-Level Candidates: Your Path to Appointment

  1. Apply and test — Complete the written examination and submit your application with all required documentation as soon as possible. You must include a current, valid POWER card to qualify for placement on an eligibility list (all POWER testing costs are your responsibility).
  2. Complete all examination elements — Testing components, passing scores, and relative weights are established by the Board of Fire and Police Commission at the beginning of each testing process.
  3. Claim your preference points — If you pass all examinations by the required percentages, you may elect military preference points under 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-8 and any other preference points identified by the Commission. Follow the Board's instructions for electing points — they are not applied automatically.
  4. Earn your place on the Final Eligibility List — After preference points are awarded, you'll be ranked by combined examination score and preference points, regardless of when you tested. Your name remains on the list for one year. 
  5. Certification and selection — Eligibility lists are certified through the Board of Fire and Police Commission on an as-needed basis. When a vacancy is filled from the list, appointment is made from the ten highest-ranked candidates.

Department Information

The Arlington Heights Police Department is a nationally accredited law enforcement agency providing professional policing services to the residents, businesses, and visitors of the Village. The department is comprised of 141.5 employees, of whom 111 are sworn police officers and 30.5 are civilian staff.

Patrol Officers work nine-hour shifts on a five-days-on, three-days-off schedule, a rotation that provides consistent, predictable time off and a genuine work-life balance uncommon in the profession. Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, a Police Officer performs general policing functions to ensure the safety and security of lives and property within the Village. Officers are assigned to a designated area of the Village in which they perform patrol, traffic law enforcement, and routine investigative duties, and may be assigned special projects on an ongoing or short-term basis. Incumbents are required to draw upon extensive training as well as the procedural guidelines, mandates, and laws governing an officer's response and conduct when determining the appropriate action to take in any given situation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Patrol a designated area of the Village on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or in a vehicle to enforce all laws and regulations, provide security, and detect violations. Performs traffic law enforcement and escort services.
  • Respond to complaints, accidents, disturbances, and requests for service; assesses each situation and determines the most appropriate response to prevent potentially dangerous or violent situations from occurring or escalating. Assists the Fire Department on fire and medical calls.
  • Investigate thefts, crashes, and other incidents by gathering, securing, and documenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and recording pertinent information. Conducts surveillance when required.
  • Effect arrests of persons violating the law, including physically detaining individuals in accordance with established guidelines, procedures, and training.
  • Responds to emergency situations and administers basic first aid to injured persons as necessary. Performs other tasks in support of emergency personnel, such as crowd control and traffic direction.
  • Maintain records of activities and prepares thorough, accurate reports to provide information to investigators and prosecutors. Submits reports for supervisory review.
  • Testify in court proceedings to present evidence and provide a personal account of incidents and crimes.
  • Engage proactively with residents, businesses, and community members to build trust and further the Department's community policing mission.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of modern police procedures and techniques and their appropriate application in various situations.

Salary Information

Salary for all entry-level applicants start at base (Step 1) salary. Employees receive salary increases as outlined below. Officers attain top base salary after 6 years of service.

College Requirement

Applicants for an entry-level police officer position must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent and an associate’s degree. In lieu of an associate’s degree, an applicant may:

(a) possess credit for at least 60 hours toward a bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher learning accredited by the U.S. Department of Education; or

(b) have served for 24 months of honorable active duty in the United States Armed Forces and not have been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other than honorable; or

(c) served for 180 days of active duty in the United States Armed Forces in combat duty recognized by the Department of Defense and has not been discharged dishonorably or under circumstances other thanhonorable.


Other Preference Points

Candidates who achieve a passing score on the written examination are eligible to claim preference points. A maximum of five (5) points may be claimed. Preference points offered shall not be cumulative. In cases of multiple preference point submissions by a single applicant, only the highest eligible preference points may be awarded. Preference points are offered in the following categories:

  • Military Experience: Those who were engaged in the active military or naval service of the United States for a period of at least one year and who were honorably discharged therefrom, or who are now or may hereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service - Five (5) points. (Please note, inactive/reserve duty status is in lieu of an honorable discharge, not active-duty time served.)
  • Law Enforcement Officer Experience: Applicants who have successfully been awarded a certificate attesting to the completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Academy, are currently serving as an active full-time law enforcement officer and are otherwise ineligible for application under the Police Department’s Certified Entry Program. - Five (5) points.

  • AHPD Civilian Employee Experience: Applicants who are current Village of Arlington Heights Police Department full-time civilian employees in good standing and who have served no less than 12 months. - Four (4) points.

  • AHPD Internship and Apprenticeship Experience: Applicants that have successfully completed a Village of Arlington Heights Police Department sponsored internship or apprenticeship program, either in a part-time paid or college course credit capacity. - Three (3) points.
