Important Information

The Middleton - Star Fire Districts anticipate filling 4 Reserve (part-time) Firefighter/EMT vacancies in 2023. We welcome reserve firefighter candidates to start the process, learn more about our communities, our department, and get a feel for their compatibility with our organization before beginning the interview process. The candidate list established with this process will remain in effect for the next 12 months as future openings are possible.

This hiring process will be used to fill Reserve (part time) Firefighter/EMT positions only.

Candidate Firefighter and EMT skills assessment and NWCG arduous work capacity test: February 2023 (exact Dates TBD)

Please pay special attention to the requirements below.

Prospective lateral Firefighter/EMT candidates must possess an IFSAC or ProBoard accredited Firefighter 1 certification and a current Idaho EMT license or National Registry EMT certification. Firefighter 1 certificates that are not IFSAC/ProBoard accredited and issued by a state or college outside of Idaho will be considered on a case by case basis.

Personal History Statement (PHS):

A completed Personal History Statement (PHS) MUST be uploaded to your Public Safety Testing account prior to application closing date.

Candidate Physical Fitness Assessment:

The Middleton and Star Fire Districts utilize the NWCG arduous work capacity test as our fitness standard for all employees. Lateral firefighter candidates must successfully pass this test in order to move forward in the hiring process.

Candidate Firefighter and EMT Skills Assessment:

Lateral Firefighter/EMT candidates are required to successfully pass a firefighter and EMT skills assessment. The assessment consists of 5 fundamental firefighter skills and 1 EMS trauma scenario.

COVID-19 vaccination status: The Middleton and Star Fire Districts highly recommend that all employees are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. However, employees are not currently required to be vaccinated as a condition of their employment. All candidates should be aware that the fire district's current requirements for COVID-19 vaccination are subject to change.

Community Information

The Communities of Middleton and Star lie in the northwest corner of Idaho's "Treasure Valley", along Highway 44 just northwest of the Boise metro area. Both Middleton and Star are historically small communities with strong history of farming and agriculture, but both have experienced rapid growth and development over the past decade. Despite the recent growth, our communities have retained a "small town" vibe but with easy access to all of the amenities that the Boise Metro Area provides. Shopping, restaurants, movies, and entertainment are all easily accessible.

Southwest Idaho offers easy access to some of the most amazing outdoor activities in the Pacific Northwest. Hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, skiing, snowboarding, whitewater rafting and kayaking, and countless off-roading trails are all accessible within a short drive.

Department Information

The Middleton Rural Fire District and the Star Fire Protection District are two independent fire district that share a common border. The Middleton Rural Fire District covers an area of 110 square miles that fall into Canyon and Gem counties. The Star Fire Protection District covers and area of 55 square miles that fall into Ada and Canyon counties. Middleton and Star are each independent taxing districts with separate boards of elected commissioners and budgets, but are functionally consolidated under the leadership of Fire Chief Greg Timinsky and his administrative team. We operate out 3 staffed fire stations along the highway 44 corridor providing fire suppression, rescue, and BLS emergency medical response. Our firefighters work a 48 hour on and 96 hour off rotating shift and in so far in 2022 we have responded to around 3000 combined calls for service.

Salary Information

Reserve Firefighter/EMT salaries effective 01/01/2022

Probationary Reserve Firefighter/EMT - $12.50 per hour (6 to 12 months based on task book completion)

Reserve Firefighter/EMT 1 - $15.00 per hour

Reserve Firefighter/EMT shifts are 24 hours in length and are self scheduled. Employees in this classification are required to work a minimum of 2 - 24 hour shifts per month and may not exceed 5 - 24 hour shifts per month.

Other Candidates must successfully pass the NWCG arduous work capacity test, a basic firefighter skills assessment, and a basic EMS skills assessment to move forward in the hiring process. NWCG work capacity test records from outside agencies will not be accepted.
