Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue is nestled in the Pacific Northwest and within the great City of Kelso, WA and Cowlitz County. We are 1-2 hours from recreation and big city entertainment with Portland/Vancouver an hour South, Seattle (GO Hawks!) two hours North, and the Pacific Ocean an hour West. In 2 hours, you could be snow skiing at Mount Hood, OR or White Pass, WA or recreating on one of several lakes or rivers during the summer. The area is known for the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in May of 1980 and for its hunting and fishing. Cowlitz County has outstanding school districts, parks and sports program that makes raising a family here enjoyable. Lower Columbia College is in Longview and boasts several degree programs, including a nationally recognized nursing program. Kelso/Longview was founded by the logging industry in the '20's and Lewis & Clark trekked through the area on their way to the coast. Several movies have been filmed in the area, including Twilight and Men of Honor. And, if you're a Sasquatch believer, every January at the Cowlitz County Convention Center there's a festival celebrating the myth (or truth) behind his/her existence. The community celebrates July 4th with a firework show at Lake Sacajawea and every summer the fair comes to the Cowiltz County Fairgrounds with the Thunder Mountain rodeo and carnival rides.

Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue is a combination all-hazard fire department that serves the City of Kelso and unincorporated areas of Cowlitz County. Our department was founded on December 6, 1947 as part of a special election. Our service area is approximately 152 square miles. We provide service to approximately 34,000 citizens, responding to approximately 5000 calls/year. We respond to the emergencies with 3 on-duty ALS/BLS ambulances and one fire engine spread among the 5 fire stations within the District. In 2020, two new fire stations were demolished and replaced as part of an $11,000,000 bond approved by our citizens in 2016 and new apparatus/equipment purchased and placed in service to include our first ladder truck (L25) stationed at our Lexington Station 25. We have mutual aid response with the other Fire Districts in Cowlitz County and with Longview Fire Department.
Our staff consists of 38 full-time firefighters represented by IAFF 3828, 9 part-time firefighters, 9 intern firefighters and currently 12 staff members that make up the administrative staff that supports the operations and business side of the District. In, addition we have 50-60 volunteers that participate on shift and respond from home as needed. We have additional programs that contribute to the growth and development of a professional firefighter, these programs include, fire investigation, hazmat technician, wildland mobilization, etc.
Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue utilizes the 3 platoon shift schedule and the Modified Detroit schedule. In addition, there's a 4th shift (Day shift) that makes up some of the administrative staff supporting operations.
Annually the department participates in Shop with a Firefighter, MDA, and National Night Out.

TESTING IN WASHINGTON STATE CANCELED THROUGH MAY 31, 2020
All pre-employment tests in Washington State have been canceled until May 31, 2020 unless government restrictions are eased. With recent updates, facility closures, and government guidelines, this step is necessary and could be modified at any time. The health and safety of our customers, our staff, and their families is of the highest priority.
We will continue to evaluate developments and make changes to this policy as necessary. When we do resume testing, there will be plenty of events for everyone to test. We are in regular communication with our public safety agency partners, assessing alternatives to the traditional testing model and our testing policies. Any future updates will be posted on the PST website and our Facebook page.
If you have tested with PST in the past 12 months, there may be additional positions you are now eligible to add. Several departments have temporarily changed their testing policies due to the suspension in testing that COVID-19 has caused. Please login to your PST account and navigate to the ‘New Positions’ page to see what departments you can add! We will regularly update that page in your account as departments send updates.
FUTURE TEST REGISTRATION
We know that there will be testing in the future - we just don’t know when! We want you to be prepared for when testing begins again so we have created test events on our calendar that you can register for that will place you in a queue to be first notified. These tests are not “real” test events, they are essentially a holding area. You will be able to “reschedule” out of that event to any other event date/location at no cost. Registering now will also give you time to work on your Personal History Statement (PHS) so that your data will be ready and up-to-date to send to your departments once testing resumes.
To sign up for this placeholder event, select the June 15, 2020 test date in your category (police, fire, 911 dispatch, corrections, etc.).
