Corrections Deputies are a critical component of law enforcement by providing care and security for the inmates of the Clark County jail facilities. The Corrections department is dedicated to protecting the community from the inside.

Duties include moving inmates within the facility, monitoring visitation, recreation, and meal service. Additional duties include performing safety and security searches, monitoring jail access, and writing reports on inmate rule violations and general conduct issues. Most assignments will involve supervision of male and female inmates ranging from minimum to maximum security levels. Opportunities range from supervising inmate living units and participation on the security response team to assisting inmates in successfully reentering the community.

Corrections Deputies are responsible for the around-the-clock operation of the jail and must be available to work all shifts as assigned; day, swing and grave including weekends and holidays. Commensurate with seniority and work experience, Corrections Deputies may serve in specialty and ancillary assignments. Corrections Deputies are represented by the Clark County Corrections Deputy Guild.

Lateral Candidates must possess these qualifications:

• Two to three years of custody experience in a comparable county, municipal or state agency in the United States.

• Current certification through a state corrections academy (comparable to Washington State Academy).

• Have the ability to successfully complete the Washington State Training Commission’s Equivalency Academy within the first 12 months of employment and prior to completion of probation.

Eligible Lateral candidates are not required to pass the Physical Agility Test.

Corrections Deputies in the Sheriff’s Office are governed by State Civil Service laws, which require specific recruitment and testing procedures. This recruitment will be used to create a continuous one-year eligibility list to fill current and future positions within the Sheriff’s Office.

Once an applicant has tested and applied successfully, no new written scores will be accepted until the applicant is no longer on the current Eligibility List. Vacancies are filled after successful background investigations by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for selection as vacancies occur.
