Community Information

West Richland is located in Southeastern Washington, with year-round recreation. We are within minutes of two major rivers, and only a couple of hours to popular snow skiing, snowmobiling and mountain activities. Many outdoor opportunities exist, including; hunting for big game, waterfowl and upland birds, fishing on one of the three nearby rivers and we are a short drive to many popular wildlife areas including; McNary, Snake River, Potholes and Crab Creek. Other recreational opportunities are available nearby including a hiking and kayaking and windsurfing.

The city is adjacent to the Red Mountain American Viticultural Area, attracting thousands of tourists and local citizens each year. West Richland Wine Park, part of the Red Mountain Center - a 320-acre multi-use development designed around the wine destination theme. West Richland is also home to the Pacific Rim Winemakers and Ascentia Wine Estates, receiving regional and national acclaim (www.rieslingrules.com). In 2010, one of the state's hand-full of distilleries opens to the public at Red Mountain Center.

West Richland has an active Chamber of Commerce, promoting expansion of our commercial enterprises and promoting our unique strengths for ongoing growth and planned development for the future.

West Richland residents are within the Richland School District, and currently supports two elementary and one middle school.

Department Information

The West Richland Police Department is a progressive law enforcement agency which is poised for future growth with the surrounding community. The police services provided to West Richland incorporate a proactive approach of enforcing laws and interdicting criminal activity, as well as partnering with local residents, businesses and community groups to effect a positive change to the safety and security of the community members and visitors. Currently the WRPD participates in the METRO Drug Task Force, Traffic safety emphasis programs and has one assigned detective. In addition to full time police officers are full time support staff and a volunteer force which includes an active Reserve Officer Program. The WRPD provides 24/7 coverage to a area exceeding 22.7 square miles. Future plans include expansion in our participation with our regional partners as well as expanded programs within the department.

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of five" with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur. Salary Information

Wages are determined through a collective bargaining between the City of West Richland and the West Richland Police Officers Association. Current entry level wages are $4,252 per month for probationary third class officers. Lateral Entry officers are brought in at a class commensurate with experience.
