Community Information

Tukwila is a small city in terms of square miles (approx. 9.65) and residential population (20,000), but is much larger in every other respect. Located just south of Seattle and minutes from Sea-Tac International Airport, Tukwila is home to one of the nation's largest retail complexes. We have a thriving business community that includes 3,000 retail, office, distribution, and heavy and light manufacturing businesses. Our daytime population approaches 140,000, except during the holiday shopping season, when that figure increases significantly.

Tukwila is centrally located for outstanding recreational opportunities. A short drive north leads to world-class major league sports facilities. Department Information

The Tukwila Fire Department is a progressive department dedicated to the welfare of both the people we serve and to each other. We offer a full service fire department. In addition to fire and EMS emergencies, we provide hazardous material and technical rescue response. The department is a participant in the Puget Sound Urban Search and Rescue Team; our rescue and hazardous materials technicians are among the highest trained and most professional responders in the state.

Our fire prevention bureau provides plan review and inspections for new construction, tenant improvements, and sprinkler/fire alarm systems. They also provide fire cause investigation and oversee our fire prevention/safety education programs.

Training and education are strongly encouraged and supported. We have a mandatory fitness program and provide one hour per shift to work out on state of the art fitness equipment. We have an excellent labor/management relationship that strives to serve the best interests of our employees at all times.

Candidates are placed on an eligibility list based on a combination of their written test scores, oral board scores, and veteran's points (as applicable).  Vacancies are filled by the Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates from the list forwarded to the appointing authority for interviewing as vacancies occur. Only the selected candidate moves forward for background investigation. Candidates will be contacted directly if they are considered for oral boards.
