Community Information

Sitka is located on the west side of Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska and is only accessible by air (2.5 hr. flight time from Seattle with Alaska Airlines) or sea. The 8,627 residents take advantage of its beautiful landscape (coastal, rainforest, and mountain) in the forms of hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping. Originally settled by the Tlingit people and later becoming the capital of Russian American, Sitka was recently named on the list of 2010 Dozen Distinctive Destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The community still exemplifies a diversification of cultures and backgrounds with a population comprised of about 69% caucasian and 22% Alaska native. In general the economy is sustained by the fishing industry, tourism, government, health care and education sectors. Sitka is home to University of Alaska SE Sitka campus, 2 high schools (including Mt. Edgecumbe boarding school), a middle school and 2 elementary schools. Medical facilities include two full hospitals as well as a couple smaller clinics. The USCG also operates an air station in Sitka. The island's relative isolation makes it a safe and wonderfully peaceful place to enjoy life and raise a family.

Department Information

The Sitka Police Department has approximately 33 employees working toward its mission to maintain order, and to preserve and protect the life, peace and property of the citizens of the City and Borough of Sitka. The department operates a 24 hour dispatch and records center, which is responsible for fire and emergency dispatch, as well as a community jail facility. The operations division consists of Investigations, Patrol, Emergency Response Vessel operators, and Investigative Dive Team. The jurisdiction of SPD covers some 4,710 square miles of land area and over 1,300 miles of coastline. However, most of Sitka's Borough is uninhabited and therefore the majority of police matters are contained to the west side of Baranof Island where the 9,020 citizens of Sitka reside.
