Port Townsend maintains a Civil Service employment list and applications are accepted at all times.  Local testing is conducted on an as-needed basis and all candidates with applications on file will be contacted regarding local testing.  Vacancies are filled by Civil Service “rule of five” with the top five candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation and selection as vacancies occur.  


Salary Information

2019:    Entry Level Police Officer starts at $31.75/hour 

5 step annual pay system plus education incentive pay and longevity.

The City pays 90% of the premium for employee, spouse/domestic partner and dependents up to age 26. This plan is administered by WA Teamsters Welfare Trust Fund.

Deferred Compensation Match Program

A 457(b) program match is offered in which employees may set aside a portion of their earnings on a tax-deferred basis for retirement purposes.

The City provides a 50% match of up to the total of 4% 

of the officer’s base earnings.

Officers are enrolled in the Washington Department of Retirement Systems, Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters (LEOFF) Pension Plan.
