Community Information

Kittitas (pronounced “kit-i-tass) County is located in the direct center of Washington State. Kittitas County spans from the Cascade Mountains, to the upper Yakima River Valley and on to the mighty Columbia River. This area experiences all four seasons and provides ample opportunities to experience the outdoors. Kittitas County is a destination for those who enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, skiing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing, rafting and many other outdoor activities. Gene Dana is on his fifth term as the elected Sheriff. He has been in law enforcement for over 41 years. The Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement, corrections, civil division, emergency management, search and rescue and marine patrol. Mission statement

The mission of the Kittitas County Sheriff's Office is to treat the people with respect and dignity while accepting the duties and responsibilities required by law and to serve faithfully and honestly. To safeguard lives and property, protect against deception, intimidation and disorder. To investigate diligently those crimes and activities which violate law, while utilizing professional and cost effective standards and techniques available to law enforcement.

The Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office consists of 72 sworn positions and 18 civil positions, plus volunteers assisting in numerous aspects throughout the department.  The 72 sworn positions include Administrators, Line Deputies, Corrections Officers, Detectives, and Courthouse Security.   The civil positions include Law Enforcement Clerks, Control Room Operators, and a Technologist. 

The Sheriff’s Office collaborates with local and state agencies, while the Corrections Center houses for local, state and federal agencies.

While working at the Corrections Center you will have the opportunity to experience all of the aspects of correctional work.  This includes intake and booking, control room operation, transporting inmates to court and other destinations within and also outside of our county. You will have the opportunity to assist with direct supervision of inmates in the annex while you work as an important part of our close knit team. Daily duties are rotated between officers allowing you to be well rounded and highly capable regardless of what the day brings.  Our schedule rotates allowing officers ample time off and working both days and nights. 

As a Patrol Deputy you will have the chance to work in a lot of different environments and dynamic situations. You will have the chance to assist other agencies and also work independently as you patrol the county from Snoqualmie Pass to the Columbia River.

Current Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation and selection as vacancies occur.
