Community Information

Kirkland, incorporated in 1905, is on the northeastern shores of Lake Washington, with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and the Seattle skyline. With Bellevue and Redmond and Seattle just minutes away, Kirkland provides easy access to urban areas while still maintaining a suburban feel. City now has a population of approximately 81,000 and is the 12th largest city in Washington. Kirkland covers 18 square miles and has nearly 10 miles of shoreline.


Department Information

The Kirkland Police Department is a state accredited agency. The department has 142 employees, which includes 102 commissioned officers and 40 support personnel.

There are 3 divisions within the police department; Operations, Professional Standards, and Administrative.

The Operations Division consists of Uniform Patrol, Traffic and K-9. 

The Professional Standards Division is separated into two Sections; Professional Standards and Investigations. Professionals Standards oversees the department Special Operations (Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiators, and Civil Disturbance Team) as well as all department training, training cadres, Honor Guard, and the departments General Orders and Standard Operating Procedures, and Risk Management.  The Investigations Section includes Detectives, Domestic Violence Unit, Family/Youth Advocate, Narcotics Detective, and the Police Analyst.

The Administrative Division includes the Records Unit, Property/Evidence Unit, and Corrections. The Administrative Division is responsible for Police Technology, Facilities, Vehicles, Hiring, Promotional Testing and Equipment

In addition to primary assignments, the department has many opportunities for officers to become certified instructors in Defensive Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Firearms, Police Training, and Less Lethal weapons. Officers also have opportunities to work with outside agencies such as the Eastside Narcotics Task Force, Regional Groups and the Criminal Justic Training Commission. Officers are provided and supported in multiple career and development opportunities.

Other Applicants who pass all portions of the examination process with a minimum of 70% will be placed on an eligibility list for hiring considerations. Once a conditional offer of employment is made all applicants will have a medical examination, including a drug screening, a psychological evaluation and a Polygraph. A background investigation will be conducted which will include the applicants work and credit histories, driving and arrest/conviction records as well as other screening elements.

Candidates must successfully pass the Physical Fitness and Abilities Test for this agency.

Current Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing of scores received from oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

There are currently 10 vacancies for Commissioned Police Officer. The department is testing continuously in order to maintain and up to date list in order to quickly fill vacancies that are anticipated in the near future.

Salary Information

2019 rates:  $5,774 (entry level officer) to $7,529 (top step officer) per month plus available incentives:

AA Degree 1%, BA / BS 3.5%, Graduate Degree 4.5%, Physical Fitness Incentive 1%, Accreditation 1%, Night Shift 1%, Longevity 2.5% to 9% and Specialty Pay Incentive for certain assignments.
