Community Information

Juneau is Alaska's capital city. It is located in the "panhandle" of Southeast Alaska and is approximately 500 miles southeast of Anchorage and 900 miles north of Seattle. Juneau is accessible only by air and sea. The economy is based largely on government and tourism. Juneau provides a safe and healthy family environment. The city is served by six elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools, a charter school, and the University of Alaska, Southeast. The community has a modern hospital. The city also has two museums, five libraries, two theatrical groups, a symphony, baseball and softball fields, indoor swimming pool, several boat harbors, an ice rink, a golf course, and a ski area. It is situated in a maritime rainforest that abounds with stunning scenery and many recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing, boating, camping, hiking, biking, kayaking and wildlife viewing.

Juneau Police Department Mission Statement

In partnership with the people of Juneau, our mission is to make our city a place where people can live safely and without fear.

The department provides general police services to the City and Borough of Juneau, covering an area of 3,081 square miles and a population of approximately 32,000. The department consists of 2 divisions: Operations and Police Services. Within these divisions, there are 5 primary units: Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Community Service, Records and Communications. Due to Juneau's isolated geographic location, JPD is required to remain self-sufficient. Therefore, the department also maintains specialized teams in SWAT, Bomb Squad and Hostage Negotiation. JPD strives to provide regular and current training to all staff and operates from a modern facility that includes an up-to-date computerized dispatch center and records unit.

Current Hiring Status Testing dates established through end of year 2018, please see the Important Information section above for dates. If you have no law enforcement experience, you must begin the process with testing through this website. A sample test schedule is as follows:

Day 1: 0830 - Register for testing which will begin at 0900 and end at approximately 1330.

Day 2: 0900 - Physical Fitness Agility Test (time needed depends on the number of candidates, approximately 1-2 hours)

Day 2: 1300 hours - Oral Board interviews (1 hour per candidate, scheduled every hour, beginning at 1300 hours).

Day 3: 0800 hours - Oral Board interviews (continued) (1 hour per applicant, scheduled every hour, beginning at 0800 hours).

Day 3: 1200 hours - PHQ/SAR written testing (approximately 4 hours)

Must be physically sound and free from physical defects that would adversely affect performance as a police officer. This will be determined through evaluation of a medical examination by a licensed physician.

Current Hiring Status

Number of Current Vacancies: The Juneau Police Department currently has 10 vacant sworn positions.  Once we have filled our open positions, we will establish an eligibility list.

Salary Information

Base Rate: $30.75 per hour.  Higher starting salary offered for college degrees and advanced experience.
