Community Information

Colfax is the County seat of Whitman County, and is located about 14 miles north of Pullman / WSU and 60 miles south of Spokane on highway 195. Colfax is an agriculture community, in an area of rolling hills with dryland hillside wheat, barley and legume farming. Colfax has agriculture business and manufacturing, a retail business district, government offices and service firms of accountants and lawyers. Colfax is home to impressive rural health care services, centered on Whitman Hospital and Medical Center, a large doctors clinic, nursing home, assisted living facilities and a congregate care facility. Through the Hospital and clinic, a wide range of medical specialists serves the area. Colfax enjoys a minimal rate of violent crime, and low rates of serious crime and drug problems. The community still has an air of country life and trust. The Police Department's goal is to keep that feeling among the citizens while dealing with the crime and problems of modern society. The school system is considered to be excellent, and there are many houses and building lots available to new residents.

Department Information

Colfax Police Department is a 6 officer Department, with a Chief and five officers. The Department has four part time officers.  The Police Department is in the same building as City Hall, and the Fire Department, and has a close working relationship with the Firemen. Colfax has a Municipal Court that handles traffic and misdemeanor cases.  The patrol cars have 2-antenna moving radar, and handheld radar and LIDAR are used for traffic enforcement. Officers are encouraged to attend training in various areas, which improves both the Officer and the Department. The Department operates under the theory that community policing always has been a way of life for small departments like us.
