Community Information

Benton County is located in Southeastern Washington within a confluence of Columbia, Yakima, and Snake rivers where there is over 300 days of sunshine. We are a mix of urban and rural community with a population of 177,900 and cover an area of 1,722 square miles. The great weather and water make Benton County a great place for water recreation, golf, and hiking, to name a few. Agriculture, over 160 wineries, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and numerous food-processing plants are just some of the industries that drive our economy. Benton County was established in 1905 with Prosser chosen as the county seat. The Prosser Courthouse was built in 1926 and as the population expanded, the Benton County Justice Center in Kennewick opened up in 1984. The Courthouse, Justice Center, and Sheriff’s Office serve the needs of the population from both ends of the county and unincorporated areas.

The sheriff's office is located in the Benton County Justice Center at 7122 W. Okanogan Place, Bldg. B, Kennewick, Washington 99336. The sheriff's office also maintains a business office in the Prosser courthouse and unmanned substations in Prosser and Benton City.


The current population of Benton County is approximately 177,900 with about 35,495 people residing in unincorporated areas. The county covers 1722 square miles, which includes the 420 square miles encompassing the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.


The sheriff's office is comprised of 217 full time employees, of which 210 are civil service positions and 6 appointed staff positions.  The sheriff's office also maintains a force of 11 volunteer reserve deputies.


In addition to providing services to the residents of Benton County, the sheriff's office provides basic law enforcement services to Benton City and the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.

Current Hiring Status

Benton County currently has SIX openings in our Patrol Deputy Division at this time. Salary range $5,380 TO $6,803 per month, plus benefits.
