The City of Aberdeen is located near the beautiful Pacific Ocean, fifty miles west of Olympia. The City has a population of 16,700 with the immediate area having a total population of 35,000. Aberdeen is currently redeveloping its downtown business core with older buildings coming down and newer ones going up. Aberdeen is the retail trade center of Grays Harbor County, with two malls and a redeveloping downtown. The Grays Harbor Community Hospital's East and West campuses are located in Aberdeen. In addition, most doctor's offices are located within the City. We are proud of our five modern grade schools, a newer middle school, and a soon to be built new high school. While free from the congestion of larger cities, you are still only a short drive away from Tacoma, and Seattle. Outdoor opportunities abound in Grays Harbor such as fishing in the many rivers or in the ocean, hunting deer and elk, hiking in the Olympic National Park, camping in the many parks, or just spending time on the beach. It's a great place to live and work.
The City of Aberdeen Police Department is a state-accredited, progressive law enforcement agency consisting of 36 sworn officers and 13 non-sworn staff members. Special areas of assignment include: K-9 (an apprehension dog and a narcotics detection dog); Bicycle Patrol; Field Training Officer; Firearms instructor; Motorcycle Officer; SERT Officer; Investigation Detective; Drug Task Force Detective and Dare officer. The Police building is a modern facility constructed in 1988. It contains a fully equipped fitness room, a training room, locker rooms, a photo lab, evidence processing room, and armory. We have a modern networked computer system that is continually updating with current technologies. The department is currently updating its own firearms training facility to maximize our use of the 50 yard pistol range and 100 yard rifle range.
