Community Information

The City of Aberdeen is located near the beautiful Pacific Ocean, fifty miles west of Olympia. The City has a population of 16,700 with the immediate area having a total population of 35,000. Aberdeen is currently redeveloping its downtown business core with older buildings coming down and newer ones going up. Aberdeen is the retail trade center of Grays Harbor County, with two malls and a redeveloping downtown. The Grays Harbor Community Hospital's East and West campuses are located in Aberdeen. In addition, most doctor's offices are located within the City. We are proud of our five modern grade schools, a newer middle school, and a soon to be built new high school. While free from the congestion of larger cities, you are still only a short drive away from Tacoma, and Seattle. Outdoor opportunities abound in Grays Harbor such as fishing in the many rivers or in the ocean, hunting deer and elk, hiking in the Olympic National Park, camping in the many parks, or just spending time on the beach. It's a great place to live and work.

Department Information

The Aberdeen Fire Department was first organized in 1890 by the merging of the Wishkah and Pioneer Hose Companies and the Relief Hook-n-Ladder company. As the city began to grow, so did the Fire Department, which became a fully career organization in February of 1908.

The Aberdeen Fire Department (AFD) covers a service area of its city limits (10.5 sq. miles) and additional EMS coverage outside of the city that includes about 100 sq. miles. The Chehalis River divides the city, thereby requiring a main headquarters station on the north side and one sub station on the south side of the river. Both facilities were constructed in 1966. In addition to a Chief and Assistant Chief, staffing consist of 33 uniformed personnel, comprising three platoons and two daily civilian administrative employees. A daily on duty crew of eight to ten personnel staff both stations, utilizing an engine, ladder, command vehicle and medic unit. Each shift is supervised by a 24-hour on-duty Battalion Chief.

TESTING PROCESS: The testing process is comprised of three parts, a written examination, physical abilities test and an oral interview. You must take and pass a written examination and a physical abilities test to be invited to participate in the oral interview process. The written and physical agility examinations are administered by Public Safety Testing. Upon successful completion of these three test components, you will be placed on an eligibility list based on your combined score. The written examination will account for forty percent (40%) of your final score. The oral interview will account for sixty percent (60%) of your final score.

CPAT Your CPAT must be completed with Public Safety Testing to be valid, CPAT certifications from other fire departments or testing centers will not be accepted.

NWFFBT Regence Blue Shield High Deductible medical plan with the employee paying $86.51 per month toward insurance for him/herself and family members. The City makes additional contributions to an HRA to help fund the deductible.
Dental: NWFFBT WDS Incentive Plan 7 (w/ $2000 ortho) - City pays 100% Premium for employee and 95% for dependents.
Vision coverage is included in the  medical plan.
Life Insurance - $10,000 Life Insurance Benefit paid by City.
City pays $75.00 per month for a MERP.
City pays dollar for dollar match up to $50.00 per month for Deferred Compensation Program.
