The City of Pullman Civil Service Commission is accepting test results for the positions of Entry-Level Firefighter/Paramedic on a continuous basis. Test results are kept on file and valid until their expiration date. Oral boards are scheduled when the current eligibility list is exhausted or expires, whichever comes first.

Department Information

The department proudly serves the residents of Pullman, a diverse, vibrant and progressive city that is home to Washington State University. We also provide medical transport services to Whitman County Fire District 4, 12 and the City of Palouse.


Pullman Fire Department is a combination department comprised of full-time professional and reserve firefighters engaging in the performance of fire suppression and emergency medical services. Fire suppression is provided to all properties within the city limits of Pullman including Washington State University. Department Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians provide ambulance service to the city and to 450 square miles of rural area including the towns of Johnson, Albion, and Palouse.

Job Description

This position performs a variety of life and property protection work through the suppression and prevention of fires and in response to emergency aid calls on a shift. At the scene of a fire, work is performed under hazardous conditions involving smoke, heat, and cramped surroundings, generally requiring strenuous physical exertion. At the scene of a medical emergency or accident, firefighters attend to the public under stressful conditions involving trauma, suffering, and personal tragedies.


In addition to the other listed requirements, the successful candidate must demonstrate the following abilities: communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing; read, comprehend, and apply a variety of fire suppression, prevention, inspection, and emergency medical materials and information; develop skill in the use and care of a variety of mechanical operations; be able to reason and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations or situations involving personal danger; be able to learn and apply a variety of firefighting duties and methods, as well as skill in the use of firefighting equipment within a reasonable work test period; have physical strength and agility sufficient to perform the work required; maintain effective relations with fellow employees and with citizens from varied racial, ethnic, or economic backgrounds.

Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointed authority for background investigation and selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

Entry Level - $5876-7142 (plus 9.5% for paramedic certification).

Benefit Information

All uniforms and equipment are issued by Pullman Fire Department. Vacation and benefits include 11 paid holidays, 12 paid vacation days (increases with longevity), 12 paid sick days per year, enrollment in Washington State LEOFF2 Retirement, Medical/Dental/Vision/Life Insurance provided for employee; employee contributes 10% for eligible dependent's medical insurance.
