Community Information

Mount Vernon, cited as the best small city in America in 1997, is situated on the I-5 corridor midway between Seattle and Vancouver, BC. It is the largest city and county seat in Skagit County. We are a 20-minute drive from Anacortes- the beginning point of the State ferry system ride to Sydney, BC and the San Juan Islands. Skagit County is home to the popular Tulip Festival, Highland Games, and the largest wintering bird population in the lower 48 states. Mount Vernon hosts an excellent school system (including Skagit Valley College), medical facilities, and cultural and recreational opportunities.

Department Information

The Mount Vernon Police Department is a full service policing agency. It is a progressive and professional agency currently consisting of 46 Police Officers, 2 Community Service Officers, 1 Community Outreach Coordinator, and 10 FT and 1 PT records/clerical personnel. All personnel are well-trained and equipped. There is a one year probation period for all new employees. The Department shares a participative management style with all ranks and supports the multilevel career certification from the Training Commission. The Department provides additional specialized service such as a Division committed to crime prevention education and services, gang resource, neighborhood and school resource officers, traffic education, engineering and enforcement, K-9, criminal investigations, Interlocal Drug Task Force, tactical and crisis negotiation capabilities. The Department also has a Park Ranger function which is instrumental towards achieving the City’s vision of creating a “hometown” atmosphere by ensuring quality services, facilities and leisure experiences are accessible, safe and enjoyable to the public. Law Enforcement Rangers work out of the police department, possess limited authority to enforce crimes and infractions on city park properties and are expected to provide interpretive education which influences individual responsibility for the habitat and environment within our parks and trails systems.
