Community Information

Founded in 1963, Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 21, also known as Graham Fire & Rescue, serves a population of about 63,000 residents spread over 70 square miles of southeast Pierce County in Washington State. The District encompasses the communities of Graham, Gem Heights, Bethel/ Green Acres, Frederickson, Kapowsin, Benston, and Thrift. The area is primarily suburban in nature with an increasing number of homes and commercial properties every year. There are 16 schools within the District’s boundaries.

The District is a proud and progressive organization with six fire stations strategically located around the District to provide efficient and immediate response to fire and medical incidents. Response apparatus includes 6 engines, 1 aerial ladder, 4 firefighter/paramedic ALS transport units, and 2 water tenders. The department maintains the latest in vehicles and equipment, from medical electronics to advanced communication and computer systems.

In 2017, the District responded to 6,968 alarms. Over 80% of those requests were related to medical aid incidents. The need for improved services dramatically increases with our community’s rapidly growing population.

The District is governed by a five member board of elected Fire Commissioners and staffed by approx. 73 full time, uniformed career personnel, 8 administrative staff personnel and 13 volunteer and resident firefighters. Graham Fire & Rescue is proud of our career and volunteer membership and their continuing commitment to customer oriented services that add value on behalf of the public we serve. The District is the single first response and transport agency for all 9-1-1 medical aid requests. There are no commercial ambulance providers in our District. We operate three ALS Medic Units staffed by firefighter/EMTs and firefighter/paramedics. We operate under a progressive set of protocols designed to give our paramedics the opportunity to aggressively treat medical and trauma emergencies. We maintain a close working relationship with neighboring districts and air transport providers in an effort to ensure the most appropriate care and transport. Because of the suburban/rural nature of our District, our paramedics and EMTs have the opportunity to provide treatment for extended periods of time and thereby develop high level skill sets. Our Medics and EMTs are a very talented group of professionals whose efforts bring continuous recognition to our Department.

The District is actively involved in educating the community through tours and fire safety classes. Our philosophy is heavily weighted toward customer service. Current Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with assessment centers and Fire Chief interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Following the Fire Chief interviews, the candidates will be placed on a ranked list for approval by the Board of Fire Commissioners. Vacancies are filled by offering the top candidates conditional offers of employment. Candidates must successfully complete a medical physical, psychological testing and extensive background investigation to receive a full offer of employment. Anticipated hiring date is September 4, 2018, with the academy starting on September 10, 2018.

Benefit Information

DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN
The ING or Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan, (or other similar mutually agreed to plan if either Plans are no longer available), will be made available to employees of the bargaining unit, with the option to participate. This is a tax-deferred investment and savings plan. The District currently contributes $320 per month and an additional $230 if matched by employee.

INSURANCE
Medical, Dental, Vision, Prescription and Orthodontic Insurances are provided for you and your dependents in 2017. The District currently contributes to a monthly Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) in the amount of $175, single; $375, family. Disability Insurance is provided by the Washington State Law Enforcement Officers & Firefighters II (LEOFF) Retirement Plan. The District supplements the long term disability plan with sick leave and other benefit coverage. An Employee Assistance Program is confidentially available and prepaid by the District.

VACATIONS
Vacation is based on number of years with the District and ranges from 96 hours to 336 hours annually. Additional holiday time off is 120 hours per year. Additional workweek reduction hours off, total 348 hours. The employee contract contains provisions for sick leave, military leave, jury duty and witness service. Protective clothing and uniforms are provided by the District.

COLLEGE REIMBURSEMENT
Graham Fire & Rescue agrees to supply to employees interested in higher education, the necessary books and tuition/registration fees for fire science, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and job related courses up to a negotiated amount, approved by the Fire Chief.
