Community Information

Wapato is situated in Central Washington, approximately 10 miles south of Yakima on the Yakima Nation Indian Reservation. Our community is made up of approximately 5000 people and our economy is primarily agricultural.

Department Information

The Police Department protects and serves the residents of Wapato. They offer a variety of investigative, preventative, and community policing programs. Their goal is to listen to you and work with you about your concerns in the community. The Municipal Jail houses our local inmates as well as inmates from contract cities.


The Wapato Police Department has a staff of 17: 10 Sworn Officers, 5 Certified Correctional Officers, and 2 Civilian Clerks and 1 Reserve Officer. The Department provides the Community of Wapato with 24-hour Police Services. The Officers are dispatched to calls by the Yakima County Sheriff Dispatch Center. Our jail houses 73 inmates, both local and out of county inmates.

Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur. Salary Information

$3,495.46 to $4,996.24 a month depending on qualifications and experience. With a raise in 2019 on current Teamsters Contract.

Benefit Information

Medical Dental and Vision coverage. Sick time accrued at 8 hours a month, 11 holidays a year, one 8 hour personal day a year, take home car, vacation starting at 12 days a year and going up per union contract, longevity pay after 5 years, AA degree $61.00 per month BA/BS $122 a month, clothing allowance of $1,050.00 a year. Additional incentives for bilingual Spanish speaking.
