Department Information

The City of Port Angeles is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/PM. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies as well as establish an eligibility list to fill several additional anticipated positions to become open in 2024. Anyone meeting the minimum qualifications outlined below is encouraged to apply.

Entry Level or Lateral Transfer Firefighter/Paramedic

Application Period: On-Going

Salary DOE: $77,194-$104,989 per year - 2022 Salary Scale + Reduction of Hours Pay - (Currently in contract negotiations w/anticipated wage increases for 2023 (retroactive), 2024, and 2025).

Requirements:

Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic (Path 1 – FF / Paramedic Student):

Experience and Training:

  • Two years education and/or experience required. Emergency medicine, firefighting, or related experience may be combined with related college coursework in Emergency Medicine or Fire Science to add up to the two years.
  • IFSAC HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications preferred. Must obtain within their first year of employment, if needed.
  • High school diploma or GED required. An Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Paramedic Technology, or related field(s) preferred.

License or Certificate:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited Paramedic Program to apply. Must obtain Washington Paramedic Certification no later than December 31, 2023.
  • Valid Washington driver’s license or, the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire date; must pass driving records checkand, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard.

Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic (Path 2 – Paramedic / FF Student):

Experience and Training:

  • Two years education and/or experience required. Emergency medicine, firefighting, or related experience may be combined with related college coursework in Emergency Medicine or Fire Science to add up to the two years.
  • High school diploma or GED required. An Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Paramedic Technology, or related field(s) preferred.

License or Certificate:

  • Currently certified National Registry Paramedic or Paramedics registered in another state must meet the Washington State Paramedic requirements and are responsible for applying for reciprocity to ensure they have a Washington Paramedic license within 2 months of hire date.
  • Must obtain IFSAC HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, and Firefighter I certifications within their first year of employment.
  • Valid Washington driver’s license or, the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire date; must pass driving records checkand, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard.

Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic (Path 3 – Paramedic / FF):


    • $2,500 Relocation/Sign-on Bonus if you meet Path 3 requirements. 
  • Experience and Training:

    • Currently certified as a Paramedic.
    • Two years education and/or experience required. Emergency medicine, firefighting, or related experience may be combined with related college coursework in Emergency Medicine or Fire Science to add up to the two years.
    • IFSAC/Pro Board HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, and Firefighter I certifications.
    • High school diploma or GED required. An Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Paramedic Technology, or related field(s) preferred.
  • License or Certificate:

    • Currently certified National Registry Paramedic or Paramedics registered in another state must meet the Washington State Paramedic requirements and are responsible for applying for reciprocity to ensure they have a Washington Paramedic license within 2 months of hire date.

Lateral Transfer Firefighter/Paramedic:

  • 6-Month Probation for Laterals
  • Pay depending on years of experience
  • $2,500 Relocation/Sign-on Bonus

Experience and Training

  • Two years’ experience as a Firefighter, Paramedic, or Firefighter-Paramedic, with at least one year as a full-time career Firefighter-Paramedic with a public agency.
  • High school diploma or GED required. An Associate’s degree or higher in Fire Science, Paramedic Technology, or related field(s) preferred.

License or Certificates:

  • Washington Paramedic certification required within 2 months of hire date. National Registry Paramedics or Paramedics registered in another state must meet the Washington State Paramedic requirements and are responsible for applying for reciprocity to ensure they have a Washington State Paramedic certification within 2 months of hire date. You can view reciprocity information via the Washington State Department of Health website. A provisional license would not meet this requirement.
  • IFSAC/Pro Board HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, Firefighter I, Firefighter II or eligible to challenge.
  • Valid Washington driver’s license or, the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire date; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard.
