Community Information

Yakima County covers 4,296 square miles and is the second largest land area and 7th largest populated area in Washington State. The population is 247,004 (2013), with the largest city and County Seat being the City of Yakima.

There are over 14 cities and towns located throughout the County. The Yakima River flows through the middle of the County which is bordered by mountains and the Columbia River.

Yakima County business continues to grow yearly. Agriculture ranks as the largest industry in the County with a high production of apples, mint, pears and hops. Additional agricultural products include peaches, apricots, cherries, beef/dairy, wheat and award winning wines. Yakima County offers many post education opportunities. The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office has been serving the people of Yakima County since 1863. Our main office is located in the City of Yakima, with Precinct Offices in Terrace Heights and Zillah.

The mission of the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is to enhance Public Safety with integrity and professionalism.  Our VISION is a safe and enjoyable Yakima County. We are a full service agency with a variety of duties and assignments. YSO currently has 61 Commissioned Deputies, 2 Animal Control Officers, 15 Reserve Deputies, 6 Department of Security Officers, 12 Dispatchers and 12 Non-Commissioned Personnel. Our patrol division works 12 hour shifts with every other weekend off. Detectives work an 8 or 10 hour shift. Some of our assignments include Patrol, Detectives, Boating, SWAT, Traffic Unit, K-9, Instructors-(EVOC, Firearms, Less-Lethal, FTO, Taser, Defensive Tactics, Active Shooter), Search and Rescue, Pass Deputy, Civil Service Deputy, Reserve Deputy Coordinator, Narcotics and Violent Offender Task Force and Special Operations.

Current Hiring Status

The eligibility list is a continuous listing and maintained as scores are received from PST with oral board interviews conducted on an as-needed basis. Vacancies are filled by Civil Service "rule of three" with the top three candidates forwarded to the appointing authority for background investigation & selection as vacancies occur.

Salary Information

Beginning April 1, 2017 salary is $4,455 Step 1 monthly to $6,206 at Step 6 monthly.  We do have premium pay for FTO, Instructor, Bi-lingual, DRE, Education (AA/BA) and Longevity.
